Yes according to cricinfo Aaron O'brien has been released, back to NSW for him i suggest.
Nah, Smith and SoK hold that position.

Wouldn't be surprised to see O'Brien picked up for a bit more than he's worth by the Strikers, and then play a few ODD games officially off-contract. Manipulate things around a bit so he stays.

Johan Botha will be released from his CSA contract after T20 WC to lead South Australia for the next two years!

He reamains committed to South African cricket in the long-term but took up this opportunity to grow his game and leadership ability.

Will be taking a pay-cut as well.
Interesting call. Oz states notoriously loath to give contracts to overseas players, nevermind the state captaincy.

Filthy chucker too, obvz.

I cannot recall who the last overseas player to captain a Shield side was. Might have to look back into the 80's.

I have a funny feeling Flower captained a game or two when there were injuries and call-ups to the Australian side.

Yeah he might have filled in - same with Khan I guess - but being named official captain of the squad like Botha has been is a first for quite sometime.

Botha following in Tony Lock's footsteps obv

I think it's a good move. I know many will disagree with this as they see the Shield a lot more as just a pathway for potential Australian Test players than I do, but I don't see it as being a lot different to going and signing a player from another state to captain - you're still searching outside your own system. Botha's batting will be a real genuine factor at this level of cricket (wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he batted in the top 5 or 6) and he's a better spinner than most of what we'll have running around in the Shield.

The only potential downside could be the fact that when you only have six domestic sides you don't really want non-eligible players taking up roles that there are usually only one of in each side (spinner, wicket keeper) as you can then easily end up with the best option in grade cricket when a national spot opens up.. but with Botha being able to bat and his home ground being Adelaide Oval, there's no reason they can't play another spinner as well as him if it's justified.

I don't think you'll get too much of that, not on here anyway. I think people are well aware that not every shield player is a potential Australian Test, even if he's a 25yo australian, and while some people - again, not on here - may think it's selfish or some **** to bring in Botha instead of a good South Australian youngster, doing what SA did to end last season and playing 3 batsman with less than 10 matches of FC cricket under their belts and just making them a walk-over is ****ing selfish as ****, given we only have 6 teams and 10 games we can't afford to have one team and plenty of games a season made into a joke. You have to balance it out. For me, bringing in overseas players is the same as playing a 32yo like steve magoffin - who cares. If you need it to make the team better, get it.

Plus SA have the first choice Aus spinner anyway. They're just getting a fill-in and surprise surprise the best option is a guy from overseas. And just quietly, given the make up of keeping stocks in Aus cricket - eg Wade, Paine, Nev and Hartley - and that they have some promising young keepers in the state, WA getting an overseas keeper wouldn't be the worse move for this season either. But then I guess Hogan might be taking up their overseas spot?

But obviously that's only if they decide Whiteman and/or the other guy whose name I forgot is a high class prospect and want to keep him

Nah, am against signing Botha.

I mean I could understand it if you sign a big name player that will raise the profile of domestic cricket and get people talking about it again, but not ****ing Johan Botha.

Even more against it that he's captaining. Would be ****ing horrified if an international fly in fly out player came over and captained NSW. gfy South Australia.

well yeah, cause it'd be a sign we have lots of sucky players. but the three wooden spoons in a row is a pretty clear sign SA have a lot of sucky players, so it's just a case of getting a good team back together so when Usman tons up at the Adl oval next year it means a bit more. As for captaining, you pick the best captain. It's pretty clear which one out of Kilnger and Botha is the better captain. The only problem I have with it is that I don't like making spinners and keepers captain unless they've really proven (see: SOK) cause it can cause problems. But then Botha is playing as an an all-rounder.
