Average players suddenly becoming very good

I felt a fair number of the current Australian bowlers like Siddle, Hilfenhaus, Harris were nothing special when they first came into the scene mainly because I was still having memories of McGrath. They've become really good though.

Simon Jones being the **** he was in 05 was a surprise for someone who didn't follow english county results and just assumed he died after he did his knee in 02/03

Steve Waugh. Before 1989 he wasn't much of a batsman, and only really turned into a gun in 1993.

Oh, and easily Ryan Harris. It wasn't until 2007 that he was a regular for South Australia ffs.

In fact, average is being too kind to the pre-2007 Harris.

But you poms always rated him didn't you? The question was more about players universally thought to be average just coming out of no where and being awesome.

My nomination would be Mussey.
Hmmm....he always had talent, he just couldn't get a game until 2005 because our batting depth was very strong.

I think one point some are missing in this thread is that they must feel that the players have improved in some way that is leading to better results.

For example, I personally think that Hayden changed his style of play and technique quite a bit before he succeeded. Kumble initially succeeded on Indian soil due to various reasons, and I think luck was a big factor in that (his initial 1-2 years). I personally felt that at some point he was going to fall short of luck. Then he added some great varieties to his bowling, and succeeded all over. Anderson improved his inswinger quite a bit. Zaheer became a completely different bowler - starting from improvements in reverse and conventional swing to improvements in his planning.

So it will be interesting if you can list some improvements in the style of play of the player you've listed - for example from anyone suggesting that Hafeez has become a much better player than before it'll be interesting to know what specfic changes Hafeez made to his game to emerge as a better player.

The whole reason I have created this thread is that I have huge respect for people who can improve themselves to become better and better (unlike Ian Botham :p ).

Tim Bresnan for me, whist there was always potential with Broad I never saw it in dear Tim, I mean he really should be working in Greggs.

Remains to be seen if he can maintain anything like the form he has shown in the last year but had already proven himself to be a much better player than I ever thought he could be.

Yeah Steve Waugh is a good shout.

He was gun from whenever I started watching/understanding cricket (1991-92), so can't sympathise with the point personally (never felt that he was ordinary, for obvious reasons).

But I am sure many of those who are following his career from the start must have dismissed him initially. I am intrigued to know which aspects of his batting technique got changed in 1989-90.

What about Prior? Noone ever seems to mention him despite the fact that he has single-handedly led his tail brilliantly recently.

Hilfenhaus probably fits the "suddenly" in the thread title best. His first over of the summer was a genuine WTF moment.

Dilshan was another one. Was always a half-decent lower order nudger at best then transformed into an unbelievably destructive opener out of absolutely nowhere.

Whatever it takes!!!
Andre Nel was crap for a lot of the time he played for RSA, esp. around 2001 when India toured there. Then for the next year and a half, suddenly became so good, adding about 15K to his speed and getting the ball to move both ways off the seam.

Too bad he slipped back to the pack after that.
