SOUTH AFRICA U19 SQUAD

QUINTON DE KOCK ©
School: KES
Age: 19
Sponsors: Gunn & Moore
3 Coke weeks
SA Colts 2009, SA Schools 2010, SA u19 tour to England
An agressive left-handed batsman wicket-keeper who made his franchise debut for the Lions in the SuperSport series last season. He was a regular in the Lions one-day side this season and scored an impressive 83 against the Titans facing Morne Morkel. Particularly strong on the off-side and capable of playing over the top or through the in-field. SA Coke week batsman and player of tournament 2010.

CHAD BOWES
School: Kearsney College
Age: 19
Sponsors: Gunn & Moore
3 Coke weeks
Chad Bowes had an impressive schoolboy career an hence played three 3 Coke weeks but unfortunately never could do enough to earn places in the SA Schools or SA Colts teams. He is right-handed batsman who can open or bat in the top order and has worked closely with ex-Dolphins cricketer Doug Watson. A few years ago scored an impressive 80 in the Schools game against the Sahara legends team that included Ntini and Quinton Friend. What impressed me was his driving down the ground. Has already got his debut for KZN amateur team and was 12th man for the Dolphins in the SSS at the back end of last season.

GIHAHN CLOETE
School: Noordkaap
Age: 19
Sponsors: Gunn & Moore
3 Coke weeks
SA Colts 2009, SA u19 tour to England
A very solid left-handed top-order batsman who either opens or comes in at 3. He has scored a FC hundred for Griquas amateur against Boland and I think he was the 3rd youngest South Africa to score a FC century. He has been contracted to the Knights and now plays for Free State amateur team. Likes to build an innings slowly.

MURRAY COETZEE
School: Pretoria Boys
Age: 18
Sponsors: DP
1 Coke week
SA Schools 2011
A very elegant left-handed top-order batsman who will be the reserve keeper in the squad. Scored tons of hundreds for Pretoria Boys High School this year and carried this form into the Coke week where he was the batsman of the week for 2011. He also scored 59 in the SA schools game against Cobras. In the same gamea few years ago where Bowes scored that 80 against the Sahara legends he scored a 50.

THEUNIS DE BRUYN
School: Menlopark
Age: 19
Sponsors: Kookaburra
1 Coke week
He is a big striking right-handed middle order batsman. Northerns and WP are known to not give Coke week caps easily and Coetzee and Muller like De Bruyn suffered from only playing one Coke week. Theunis' name shot to fame when he slaughtered the bowling at 2009 SA u17 week where scored 3 centruries including a huge 230 against Free State. He is currently playing club cricket for Assupol Tuks.

LESIBA NGOEPE
School: Hans Moore
Age: 18
Sponsors: Gunn & Moore
3 Coke weeks
SA Schools 2011, SA u19 tour to England
An agressive left-handed middle order batsman who bowls slow left-arm spin. Has debuted for the Easterns amateur team and plays for Duduza club. Recently scored an impressive 190 against Northerns u19 in a 3-day game.

SHAYLEN PILLAY
School: KES
Age: 17
Sponsors: Gunn & Moore
Will be 3 Coke weeks
SA Colts 2010, SA u19 tour to England
The impressive all-round talents (RHB & right-arm bowler) of Pillay has been playing for KES first XI since he was in grade 8. He has also been playing Old Edwardians in club cricket where he has been scoring loads of runs. It lead to his amateur debut for Gauteng last season. He also bowls impressive little away swingers and South Africa haven't had many batsman who have bowled similar sorts for quite some time. He did have a disappointing Coke week this year with the bat bat that can happen to the best of talents.

DIEGO ROSIER
School: Noordkaap
Age: 17
Sponsors: BAS
Will be 3 Coke weeks
SA Colts 2010, SA Schools 2011, SA u19 tour to England
An impressive right-handed middle order who bowls leg-spin and has a googly up his sleeve. Has already played for Griquas amateur team. He is the current SA Schools pro 20player of year and won the SA Schools player and all-rounder of the week at the Coke week for 2011. Scored 71* in the SA Schools game against Cobras.

PRENELAN SUBRAYEN
School: Glenwood
Age: 18
Sponsors: Gunn & Moore
2 Coke weeks
SA Schools captain 2011, SA u19 tour to England
An aggressive lower order RHB who bowls tidy off-spin. He was extremely impressive on the u19 tour to England where they could hardly get him off the square. Has played for Natal amateur team already.

CALVIN SAVAGE
School: Maritzburg College
Age: 18
Sponsors: Gray-Nicolls
3 Coke weeks
SA Schools 2009 and 2011, SA u19 tour to England
Impressively made the SA schools team as a 16 year old but then suffered a stress fracture in the back at a young age. Still don't believe he has returned to his full pace as he was before but has huge discilpine with his lines and lengths and is capable of moving the ball both ways from almost two meters. In the time he was recovering from injury he played as a pur batsman in the 2010 Coke week. He also was SA schools T20 player of the year 2 years ago. Has played for Natal Inland amteur team and has trained with the Dolphins already.

JAN FRYLINCK
School: Boland Landbou
Age: 17
Sponsors: DP
Will be 2 Coke weeks
SA Schools 2011
A left-handed batsman and left-arm quick bowler who has already played for Boland amateur team. In the u19 3-day series has picked up four 5-fors where he picked up 7 wickets in an innings twice.

CORNE DRY
School: Grey College
Age: 18
3 Coke weeks
SA Colts 2010, SA Schools 2011, SA u19 tour to England
Right-arm opening fast bowler who took the new ball for SA schools in 2011. Tall boy who like Savage almost reaches 2m tall. Is the brother of SA sevens rugby player, Chris Dry.

RABIAN ENGELBRECHT
School: New Orleans
Age: 19
Sponsors: BAS
4 Coke weeks
SA Colts 2008, SA Colts 2009, 2010 u19 WC to New Zeland and SA U19 tour to England
A right-arm strike bolwer with impressive pace. He comes from a wide angle at the crease. Has a tendency to be a bit inconsistent but still learning and has played for Boland amateur team.

TRAVIS MULLER
School: Wynberg Boys
Age: 18
Sponsors: DP
1 Coke week
Was the Wynberg sporstman of the year for 2011 as he is a good hockey player and captained their first XI. Bowls impressive away swing at a decent pace. Had a good Coke week but somehow missed out on both SA schools or Colts team. Also known to be able to strike the ball at the back end of an innings.

LIZAAD WILLIAMS
School: Hugenote
Age: 18
Sponsors: BAS
3 Coke weeks
SA Colts 2009, SA Schools 2011, SA u19 tour to England
A short and skidy quick bowler who has played for the Boland amateur team and was the Boland captain for 2011 Coke week but got injured before the first game.

Virus seems to be making his detractors eat humble pie. Jon jon Smuts is also playing quite good. The batting cupboard is well stocked. But explain to me what is going on with the dolphins? They are terrible.

Dolphins haven't been producing cricketers like they used to and even crowds are poor but that has been happening for a while.

It seems surfing and rugby is dominant there now.

But at least they have Ford as coach who is a very good domestic coach imo. It will take some time for them to get on par with a lot of the teams but they did start a big drive with highlighting performances of schoolboys and so on. Could see a few youngster like Bowes, Muthusamy, Subrayen, Savage and Kirsten get games for Dolphins in the next two years.

Saw Kemp bowled a team to victory was 5/30 odd in a franchise FC game a week or so ago; made me chuckle given what he bowls like these days.

Depends what the pitch was like I guess. Accurate seamers from a decent height could do well on some pitches in South Africa.

Also probably putting a bit more into his bowling because his batting has been poor this season and is irritatingly keeping Richard Levi out the 4-day team.

Interesting little 4-day debut from former Bishops scholar, Siya Simetu, for the Cobras. Got a little 40-odd and now out-bowling Dane Piedt who was ahead of him in the spinning pecking order.

Chris Morris got a hattrick for the Lions in their victory over the Warriors earlier today. A player to watch and hopefully gets more responsibility in the batting line-up because he can strike a ball. This after getting the nod to open the bowling in the 2nd innings. Saw him bowl in a one-day game and had decent pace and is 6ft plenty so interesting to see how he develops.

From cricketing stocks, father played as a spinner for Northerns for mnay years.

I rate Kemp higher than Albie, but honestly don't have a clue how he's doing these days.
Well Kemp is from that era where Proteas were obsessed with playing all rounders no matter the quality.

Although Cobras are winning the trophies - which South Africa are obsessed with

I don't particularly like Albie. Has big-hitting quality but only comes off occasionally. His bowling is weak imo although he bowled nicely in the first ODI - could have been due to the pitch/shocking SL batting though. Maybe he is a quality bowler now, I don't know. He looks like he could be much quicker - like he accelerates his bowling arm too late. Personally think he has the potential to be at 5-10 kph quicker than he is whilst improving his accuracy.
Then again I'm sure that AD has seen that if I'm right :p

When Kemp came back from the ICL, SA should have played him. You can't ignore his 50 average in T20 and his bowling is underrated IMO.

Kemp>>>>>>>A.Morkel. In terms of quality - I'm not saying Kemp is still good enough as I haven't seen him for ages.

SeamUp, there was a guy - Wiese - who I watched at buffalo park when an SA invitational XI played England. He looked like a quality big-hitting bowling all-rounder although his bowling was not exceptional. Do you know how he's doing now?

This Morris guy is quality. Havent seen him play but his stats look very good. Il put my head on the block and say that he will play for us in the next 2 years. What happendt to Tabraiz Shamshi? Went to Dolphins and is now forgoten..

Themba Bavuma has suprised me alot recently. I looks that he is now settling down and doing what is expected of him. Reeza Hendricks looks to be now really ready to push on and make a name for himself.

I must say, I saw him last season and they were playing him as a batting all-rounder but his bowling impressed me more. They decided to listen to me and he is impressing as a bowling all-rounder. :D

Spinners mature later I suppose but has been to expensive when given the opportunity at franchise level. Tough art wrist-spin as we all know so don't think we should write him off but I reckon SA u19 spinner Prenelan Subrayen will jump him and Keshav Maharaj.

Bavuma has had a brilliant 4-day season and along with Simon Harmer, Chris Morris and Dane Vilas are the 4 players probably staking their claim the most who haven't played for SA 'A' side yet ito 4-day cricket for sure.

I think its safe to say Reeza Hendricks should be next in line behind Elgar in the opening reserves for the test side. Classy looking player and is ahead of Puttick, Khan and Cook now probably.

Titans are SuperSport 4-day champions and denied the Cape Cobras their 3rd win in a row.

Titans defeated a sorry Dolphins outfit who need will hopefully start to give some of their new generation a chance next season. According to their CEO they will do. Just a matter of whether Lance Klusener will carry on beyond this season for them. I would assume Chad Bowes, Jared Van Heerden, Calvin Savage and Prenelan Subrayen will be given opportunities. Senuran Muthusamy, Craig Kirsten and Daryn Dupavillon are still at school this year.

Controversy ahead of the domestic pro20 with the 7th team being formed. All squads will be announced tomorrow by CSA along with SA's contracted squad for next season.

Cobras have signed Brad Hogg I believe.
Dolphins have Chris Gayle and new signing announced tomorrow
Lions have Dirk Nannes and Sohail Tanvir
The 7th team have Paul Collingwood and Ryan ten Doeschate so far

But you can read about controversy in this article...

THE Domestic Twenty20 competition begins on Wednesday and there already hangs about it the whiff of something not entirely kosher. For the first time in the competition's brief history, Cricket South Africa (CSA) have introduced a seventh team.

Nominally known as the Rangers - some of the mooted names are already under copyright, says coach Vinnie Barnes - they will be based at Tukkies' High Performance Centre, play their home games at Willowmoore Park and include players surplus to requirements at the six other franchises. But there is a problem.

Rumour has it that unlike the six other teams, the competition's rules have been bent to allow the team four overseas pros rather than the other sides' two, although only three of the four can play at any one time.

Paul Collingwood, one of those pros, will captain the side, and Ryan ten Doeschate will be another of their professionals.

Is it fair, with a potentially lucrative Champions League place beckoning for the competition's two finalists, that one side have access to four professionals, while other teams can use only two, even if they are disadvantaged by being surplus to requirements elsewhere? Many think not.

There is an added whiff of skulduggery in that cricket's bush telegraph is humming with news that the Sahara group, or The New Age daily newspaper, are the sponsor of the seventh team.

No one could confirm this at CSA but the information has been verified by several other sources. It's a strange situation because the competition as a whole remains sponsorless; the seventh team, however, has a sponsor. Surely this is an inversion of what should be ?

The most important factor is for a competition sponsor and then a team sponsor. Maybe, though, no one wanted to be associated with the competition after Richard Glover's resignation last month signalled all was not well, commercially, at CSA.

Having a seventh team is by no means a bad idea. Whenever people in cricket talk about it they mention the Impalas, a composite side made up of B section players who campaigned in previous limited-over competitions.

Often, sides like this operate from a sharpened sense of grievance and do better than form and track record suggest they should. Being based at Willowmoore Park is another advantage. Teams hate the ground with a passion. And who are Willowmoore Park's stadium sponsors? Sahara, which all makes things cosy to the point of suspicion.

There were further problems this week when the official launch of the competition was postponed. Presumably this was at least because there were difficulties with dotting i's and crossing t's. Some people I spoke to also took issue with the fact that some of the original precepts that led to the establishment of a seventh team have been perverted.

The initial idea was for the team to provide good (but otherwise overlooked) cricketers with a T20 opportunity.

Take the case of the Lions' Richard Cameron. He, as I understand it, was not contracted by the Lions in the list of 15 names they submitted to CSA. But he has already played Champions League cricket and would be a good addition to the seventh team.

This might now not be the case when the Lions and the "Rangers" meet in Potch on Friday. He might just be sitting out because he was pushed out by privateers.
