Talking about number of runs here, not the average.

And yeah facing the new ball is the hardest time to bat in many conditions but not in many too. Also you are pretty much guaranteed to have adequate support throughout your innings compared to say a lower middle order batsman who may have to bat with the tail.
But openers quite often have difficult little sessions when an innings ended before a break or before stumps when there's plenty to lose and very little to gain. In addition to the new ball they always face it when the bowlers are fresh, middle-order batsmen face it if they stay in long enough, when the bowlers are fatigued. It's hard to mount an argument that it's easier to open in test cricket unless every pitch was a road.
