Has the ODI cricket today lost the appeal it used to have in the 1990's?

Imo, I think ODIs, Tests and T20s have all begun to use specialist players. If there was only one format. That's were the problem is now. And they make a 10 overs perside game. That would further deepen the issue of there being players which want to play a certain format...

With certain batsmen and bowlers. It's all with their tempo of play. Some like it fast (Afridi), some like it dead slow (Azhar Ali). And that's were the problem is probably.

Love ODI's, just need to add a bit of context.

I also disagree with the people who said the selection was random, at least in India's case it wasn't. The reason India was able to play there first choice XI was actually due to the key players being rested regularly, heck not even rested, most of them got injured, almost like they were taking turns, Viru's missing then GG's available, GG's injured then Viru comes in, etc.

Dhoni had made it pretty clear that he wanted his best 11 players for the WC, and if that meant key players skipping ODI's previous to those then so be it.

I think that is the key point. Tests create their own relevance whereas ODIs need to have meaning applied artificially. This is why World Cups matches are more watchable and why Australia has gone back to the tri-series. T20s will head this way too once the novelty factor has worn off.
