IPL5 Auction

You are thinking of Hogg 10 years ago, not the 40 year old geriatric he is now. His fielding has tailed off a lot, particularly in speed to the ball.
O'Keefe can't catch though. Like, at all. He is quite possibly the most over-rated fielder of all time.

No more so than Hogg in the BBL. And who was rating him highly? SOK is average at best. Just that Hogg is fairly poor these days as well.

Steven Smith on the other hand is elite. I can't remember him dropping anything.

As well as the transfers Mumbai seem to have complimented their squad pretty well in the auction.

Given the format there are few certainties of winning but they look far and away the best team and they were up there last year. Johnson in particular is a great buy I think. Perera is decent value too, his bowling is okay in limited overs formats and the potential with the bat is there - he's not much more than a tailender in terms of his limited overs average but once he learns his game more he'll improve dramatically.

Off the top of my head, I might have missed someone obvious.

1) Sachin Tendulkar
2) Dinesh Kartik +
3) Ambati Rayudu
4) Rohit Sharma
5) Suryakumar Yadav
6) Kieron Pollard
7) Mitchell Johnson/James Franklin
8) Thisara Perera/James Franklin
9) Harbhajan Singh
10) Lasith Malinga
11) Pragyan Ojha

Not bad. Decent batting depth as well. Yadav as a finisher doesn't really cut it though.

Surprised Southee and Tsotsobe went unsold. Wasn't Southee already playing for CSK?

After Mendis ripped India apart in the Asia Cup final in 2008 I wonder what the odds were of him going unsold for 50K 3 years later. What a fall from grace.

How farcical is it that Russell went for more than Johnson or that Azar Mahmood was the only "Pakistani" player chosen?

Sums the IPL up for mine

Reckon many of us on here could choose more cost-effective squads than most of the clowns running the teams

Yeah easily. As for the Pakistanis, I don't think that's in the hands of the owners.

****ing bcci.

TBH, the teams could have signed up Pakistanis outside the auction. Can't see what the BCCI could have done about it. They're hardly in a position to overrule it given that it would violate no stated policy.

Isn't it as much an indian government issue as a BCCI issue. I thought they were really dodgy about giving pakistani's visa. Mahmood is a British citizen that's why he can get in

IIRC Pakistani players were up for auction last year too but were not bid for. So not really a government issue but the sentiment was against picking Pakistani cricketers.

Did the PCB not ban their players from ever taking part after their flounce about their players not getting picked up, or have I completely imagine that/made it up?
