Has the ODI cricket today lost the appeal it used to have in the 1990's?

Bilateral ODIs have become painstakingly boring these days. Is it due to the lack of quality or endless amount cricket being played?

Lost appeal. Or may be I feel that because of my participation at CW where ODI cricket doesn't get the due respect. On another forum that I was active before, no comparison thread was complete without dissecting ODI statistics to the same extent that we dissect test stats here. Of course it was a forum where Indians and Pakistanis made up large majority.

We need more multi-national tournaments IMO (hence looking forward to the upcoming tri-series). I don't know why ICC has self imposed a virtual embargo on such tournaments.

I love them, as do tons of people of my age. Cbf about the preceding generation of fans. They can fap to their memories of the great Pakistani bowlers, Windians and the Aussies, but I don't have that luxury, so I'm content with what I get.

Could be that people aren't able to watch them as much due to busy schedules and things like that, but I'm sure even casual fans check the scorecards every hour or so during work. Don't think it's lost it's appeal.

I love ODI cricket to be honest..I don't get the snobs around here who bitch about it... Loved the Champions Trophy in 09...loved the World Cup too..yes there are a few changes which have been made which in my view do not add any value..and overall would prefer less roads where everyone and their long lost cousin scores over 320.

Yeah I still really enjoy ODI cricket tbh. Especially in the last two years, been some superb matches (I'm pretty sure I made a post during/just after the WC listing some top-quality or just plain absurd matches that had been played whilst the format was supposedly 'dead')

Yeah, there were a couple of great games in the WC, albeit in the midst of some that dragged on and on.

I thought appeal in ODIs was on the downside, and i had some serious doubts about how longer the format would exist. But the brilliant WC this year changed all of that.I've rediscovered my love the format again.Having said that,i think ODIs will always have more appeal in the subcontinent compared to Australia-England.Just the way Test Matches will always have more appeal for Australia-England.It mixes and matches well.

At the risk of being slaughtered by the hardcore traditionalist,i think a great ODI game has all the drama of a great test match too.

Grew up watching the likes of Akhtar, Wasim, Waqar and Saqlain playing ODI cricket. Since then my love for test cricket has overtaken ODI, but I still love them. I agree with Ankit, loved watching the multi-nation ODI tournaments. That's why I am looking forward to the Asia cup.

T20's have taken the interest of those who don't have the attention to watch the real version of the sport.

I struggle to take anything seriously when it's clear the selectors aren't.
I agree. ODI's have gone from "Play the Test team" to "ODI's need specialists" to "Let's build up to the next WC" to "Play a random XI every game". I reckon one of the reasons the WC was so interesting is because the participants decided to play their first XI's for a change.

Echo PEWS and Joe's view here. ODIs were taken very seriously until about 3-4 years ago by both players and selectors. Tendulkar wouldn't skip even ODIs against Zim and Kenya for most of his career, now he hardly plays any. Even bilateral series were quite a contest.

Too many pointless OD only series that have no context and interest about them. It doesn't help that the One dayers often happen after the Tests which means they don't provide any sort build up to the main contest anyway.

See the 5 match one dayers England played in October or the ones we have against the Aussies.

I like watching the changing sides as well. New faces and debutants always excite me. No homo. Any formats good, as long as theres some form of cricket to watch. Don't care about the standards, I mean of course it's better if it's a higher standard, but a tight game between two **** sides is still a tight game and I'll be happy with that.

Agree with Daemon. Like to see the new guys and it's easier to watch the shorter formats because of the time constraints.
