The 'He has to retire to preserve the Tendulkar legacy' argument is so crap.

2011 was definitely his worst year post-2006 and he still scored about 750 runs @ 47.

Should be remembered that he had the best year of his career in 2010.

Why anyone would drop the best batsman in the country and one of the top five in the world is beyond me.

No, he still has a role in Tests but I fail to see what more he can possibly achieve playing random ODIs. He scored tons to help win the last three-nation held in Oz, why the itch this year after a disastrous tour?

All India's ODI series these days are revenge, don't forget!

Sachin hasnt really looked terrible in this series apart from this test. His 73 at Melbourne was frankly a glorious innings cut short... played a decent knock at Sydney too. He certainly hasnt looked completely lost like Dravid and Lax have.
He'll probably get the chance to go out with a bit of pride in India... not looking as though VVS and Dravid will get that, though.. such a shame.
Seems not all great players can get the sort of endings like McWarne, Langer and Martyn did

if he is in India's top 6 batsmen why shouldn't he keep going? There are four, possibly five around him that have been totally inferior in this series.

He's in bad form. Everyone goes through bad patches of form; the fact that he's doing it post-35 doesn't automatically make it terminal - we've seen that with him once before and, for a more recent example, we've seen it with Ponting to.

Agree so much with this. Just because someone goes through a poor patch and they're near the end of their career doesn't always mean they're in decline ffs.

Those people who think that sachin should retire from ODIs should remember that Sachin sometime ago said that he wont be retiring from one form to play another. He will retire from all forms of cricket together.

It just might be that the closer you get to your 40s, at least as a batsman, you may have only one window of opportunity left to cash in, and once that lapses, it becomes increasingly hard to live up to old standards. Dravid had his last year, Ponting's time may have just begun..Sachin, who knows?

Probably not because selectors always panic and drop them, or they retire.

Hussey, Ponting and Dravid are three obvious contemporary examples though.

Quite the horror..you can be an ostrich and believe it's for the sake of playing one last time in a country that's been kind to him. I'll play the cynic and think there's a 100 in there for the taking against SL at the very least. His fake modesty, rubbish about not knowing how many centuries he's scored...it all ties in nicely IMHO.

Wot? The man knows his stats, and while he's always done his variation of the cliche'd "Team is greater than the individual" speech every single player does, he's never pretended to not know how many centuries he's got.

If Tendulkar is still in the best six batsmen available for India then he should get selected. Simple as that.

^Which he almost certainly is. Imo he is still the best batsman they have, and quite comfortably at that. Honestly don't think the bloke is much worse than he has ever been. His form looks fine to me, and you can't expect him to score 7 tons (or whatever is was) every year. With the inevitable retirement of either/both Laxman and Dravid around the corner, his presence in the team is even more crucial.

Definitely sets a bad precedent when you can have someone, as hallowed as Tendulkar might be, walking into a ODI team when he hasn't played a game in 10 odd months. My problem is him not making himself available for all matches, and letting the decision, as how to best manage him, rest with the selectors. He could've played the Windies games, probably notched up his 100th, and played here with a less cluttered mindset. Nobody doubts his ODI creds obviously but this deference to seniority BS has reached epidemic proportions in Indian cricket.

Just did a quick search for threads about retirement of players and there are about 5 or 6 about Sachin already there at different times. More than any other player probably and he keeps going.

Can't see any reason as too why he should retire now unless he wants too himself. He is still among the best Indian batsman quite easily and with Dravid and Laxman possibly going too, to lose all 3 together will be a even bigger blow.
