***Official*** India in Australia 2011/12

Midwinter

State Captain
Hayden, Langer and Watson's first five tests weren't that impressive either.

Cowan and Warner were impressive last test.

Marsh obviously has a problem in not being able to get a start. Time to give someone else a go.

Yep, it's a pretty poor top three. If you put any one of those guys (Marsh, Warner, Cowan) in a recent Australian top three (around guys like Hayden, Langer, Watson, Katich, Ponting) it'd be fine. But to group all three in them first up in the one line-up...well, it's just got no authority to it; no long term-ness about it.
Cowan and Warner look like a far more reliable, solid partnership than Watson and Hughes.

Cowan will be exposed like North and Marsh. Sorry, but you just don't bob around in FC for years, averaging hovering high 30s or a tick over 40, and make a long term Test player. Granted, Cowan has done enough to get to the Windies, but a substantial body of FC stats don't lie.

I was going to say 'all around the country', but I wanted to keep it local. I blame the QLD spirit.
Home of Sir Joh, and Pauline - what did you expect?

You sound like Bill Lawry; generalising about crowds.

According to Bill, Melbourne's a happy crowd

Sydney's a knowledgable crowd etc.

Bit harsh comparing guys in their first couple of tests with about 35,000 test runs.

I agree about the chances of guys with poor fc records miraculously become top test batsmen - I just don't happen that way, but Cowan does look like he might become a reasonably dependable (around 40 ave) player. He also looks a good fit to work with Warner who I do believe will be seriously good over a long time. Marsh obviously I've never rated so seeing him go will help us but if Khawaja doesn't step up next time he gets a chance the options after him are very thin on the ground.

Any heat on Marsh yet? Surely his average over the series is the worst amongst batsmen now?

Straight swap for Watson, imo. Don't want another North on our hands for 2 years longer than necessary.
I think the reason that there isn't the same sort of 'heat' on Marsh as there was on say Hughes was that he has been just so completely craptastic that everyone just assumes there is no way he won't be axed for the Windies. With Watson likely to be fit someone in the top 6 was always going to make way and Marsh has simply made the decision for the selectors.

Comes down to time today and I reckon the Aussies might not have enough of it to win the match if they bat beyond lunch.

All factors permitting, I think they should bat until midway through the second session. Gives us 4.5 sessions (weather permitting) to bowl at them with little-to-no chance at a loss.

awta. 5 sessions is what I'd be giving myself. I don't think India will bat anywhere near 5 sessions, but by lunch we should have too many to chase in 5 sessions on a wearing pitch if they did, so get em in.

Clarke's thinking is pretty good here I reckon, rest his bowlers up have extra foot marks for Lyon to bowl into.

That said I think I'm starting to wonder why India bother going overseas to countries where the ball bounces at pace, they either play like crap or refuse any sort of risk taking.
