It's odd, usually when a player is out of form they go on after getting 50. But in his last 4 tests Ponting has got past 50 3 times yet not gone on to get one century.
Happened to Viv in his late career too. Still good enough to score a Test 50 but just not the concentration, decision-making or drive to go on with it.

Can see the difference between someone like Ponting and even Cowan. Cowan, very clear about what he's going to play or not, where he's going to hit, etc. Ponting seems to be a bit undecided until it's too late to back out if its not quite there. That he's able to do that and still score any damn runs at all is a testament to how good the bloke is because it'd be fatal for anyone else. Still a problem, though.

Cricket is about batting in partnerships. Scoring a ton isn't a pass mark, forging a good partnership is though.

Happy Ponting at least got some runs. We would be in a pretty dire situation if he got one of his patented ducks.

Yeah that's a good point too, the partnership with Cowan is really valuable so he's still very much contributing.

EDIT: In that context, no idea how hard it was to resist making another dig at Kallis, tbh.

Oh, there it is.

It must be pretty hell, what's going on in Ponting's head. To reach such heights, and then time after time fail to convert...it must seem like an absolute impossibility after a while.

Think there is such a thing as too much experience, tbh.

"Masterclass with Merv Hughes"

Masterclass on eating maybe. Was at a function with him a few months ago, has stacked it on again since that little diet phase he went through.

AB went about four years without a ton in the late 80s- early 90s iirc, but he averaged a fair bit more than Ponting has during the past few years.
