ThisIf Ian Botham's rated what he is, then Waqar had better be rated at the top table, and Ponting too.
People have always had a short term memory, that is the way the world works. It really is unfortunate how a player's standing as a legend is affected severely by his current form rather than what he's achieved over his career. Ponting imo has achieved enough to be a clear, undisputable ATG. His last 3-4 years have been terrible, but Lara and Tendulkar also had similar bad stretches. Granted, their slumps werent nearly as bad as Ponting's but im sure that if Lara hadnt got out of his 96-99 decline and if SRT had retired in 2007, or Dravid had retired last year, they would be held in slightly lower esteem by everyone.
If Ponting gets a second wind, everyone can then rightfully claim that he's as good as SRT and BCL. Unless that happens, im afraid people will underrate him just like people did with Lara ,Sachin and Dravid during their slumps
I don't think he's ever been as good as them tbh. But he's still a great player. It really is unfortunate how a player's standing as a legend is affected severely by his current form rather than what he's achieved over his career. It's all subjective at this level I think. What we need is a Christmas stats argument.
Cos we never have enough of those....
Exactly. It seems Ponting isn't recovering from his slump. 4 years and counting. And his slump is worse than at least 2 of those you mentioned if not all 3. The other 3 all played/playing at the level that they did before the slumps. Ponting isn't. If anything Ponting can be compared to Botham nowIt really is unfortunate how a player's standing as a legend is affected severely by his current form rather than what he's achieved over his career. Its not really about the runs he's scored or hasnt scored, really, even though his stats are pathetic. Its more the fact that Ponting just looks past it, the manner of his dismissals, getting out three times in identical fashion to steyn, getting 20-30 odd beautiful runs and throwing it away... all these things are just so un-pontinglike. He hits his own pad more than he hits the ball, these days it seemsOk saying Ponting hasnt recovered from his slump is a bit harsh, he just hasn't been great that's all.
Last year he scored two half centuries in India and could easily have converted them to centuries.
This year he scored a fantastic century against India in the WC.
And recently he had two half centuries in South Africa.
When people are out of form, low on confidence thats how they look when battingIts not really about the runs he's scored or hasnt scored, really, even though his stats are pathetic. That said, i fully expect him to score bucketloads in the India series. Its the perfect opportunity for him to get his form back, on flat pitches, against a pathetic attack. If he fails, then its the last straw, he's just got to retire, no two ways about it.
Well of course, thats why i said i expect Ponting to score plenty in the upcoming series. Ponting's slump has definitely been worse than SRT's and Lara's imo. He's arguably looked much worse and its lasted over 4 years, which is a ridiculously long timeWhen people are out of form, low on confidence thats how they look when batting
I saw Tendulkar struggling against Razzaq's medium pacers when out of form and I saw Lara struggle against lesser bowlers than Steyn when out of form.
Lara got out to a girl. What's your point? We've seen Ponting struggle with Ishant Sharma though, so \_/

My bad!
You'd have enjoyed lifting WC thrice and oh yeah right now you'd be a very worried man...
Who wanna lose Ashes thrice and become the only Aussie captain to have done that?
Ponting won't be that man, there's no way on Earth Engalnd are winning the series this winter.
Lol, I've seen you post this a fair few times. Australia aren't going to lose the ashes IMO and it seems like your a bitter troll.
My point was that he didn't have much of a point. Hence the \_/Lara got out to a girl. What's your point?
