If we take out the veterans in Ponting and Hussey (maybe Haddin too), what's the long term batting line up?

Warner
Khawaja (prefer him opening if he's playing at all)/ Cowan
Marsh
Watson
Clarke
??????
Wade/ Nev

Thoughts?

I think Usman must open to have a future at the top level

Just doesn't fit in the middle order - puts the anchors on our innings

With Hughes and seemingly Watson vacating, there's less competition there too

Murphy Sua: "I have to say that Tim Southee has been particularly disappointing this series. Hasn't ever really looked threating with the ball in more than favourable conditions (both tests) and his batting has been somewhat reckless at crucial times."
Wonder if it really is the big Murph - used to love his bowling action. And totally agree re Southee.

Who should NZ drop when Vettori returns?

Genuinely interested in views and I have no definitive ideas myself.

Edit: please don't suggest McCullum take the gloves back. Not happening and would rob us of an opener when we have no backups anyway.

Lol, Can't believe Ian Smith's ignorance outside of sports failing to mention Sir Ernest Rutherford when discussing famous NZ'ders. He was only the the father of nuclear physics

Is it time for Guptill to spend some time in FC cricket?

If you filter out his record against minnows, he's played 16 matches for 743 @ 24 with five fifties and no hundreds.

Harsh... but an option. He could have made his case a lot stronger by scoring a few runs this series.
Isn't threatening enough with the ball, isn't good enough with the bat. Plenty of potential in him but if we have to shove someone, it should be him.

Boult and Southee offer more with the ball and Martin isn't going till he retires.

It's a bad record, no doubt. But would Nicol/Watling/How do any better? Don't say Pinga.

I'm not a fan at all as I've made clear before but unless one of the batsmen currently in the side is going to go up to open and Guptill is just the one to make way for Vettori than I wouldn't be dropping him. I definitely think he's a better bet than Watling at this stage who is no doubt the one who'd come in.
