In the unlikely event that they were able to sign him, they would undoubtedly get ripped off massively. Whilst Bale is quite good, the hyperbole which is thrown around whenever he scores a goal or something is excessive. Samir Nasri would have been a far better signing in any case, but obviously that didn't come off either. If Utd had signed Nasri and Parker that would have made their team really formidable. Was surprised they didn't make a move to sign Ozil after the World Cup to be honest, whether they could have beat off the competition from Real Madrid is another matter though I suppose.
I agree that Bale isn't as good as he seems to be worth, I just think he'd be a good fit for the current United side stylistically.

Can't see it happening anyway though. Tbf, they are still second in the league so there may be a slight overreaction here

True, I don't think crisis point has been reached for them by any means. However, I think it's been pretty obvious for a while now, that their central midfield just doesn't cut it at the top level. It's been punching above its weight for a while now, and a lot of results (particularly last season) came from Hernandez, Berbatov, Giggs or Rooney digging them out of a hole when they really hadn't played well. I'm not sure any of their midfield would get into Arsenal's, Spurs', Chelsea's or Liverpool's team at the moment to be honest (and clearly not into City's either), unless Ferguson really believes the likes of Anderson, Carrick, Cleverly and Fletcher are all hiding something and about ready to suddenly transform into magisterial talents it's really strange that he seemingly hasn't made any attempt to address the problem.

Having said that, their run throughout the rest of the year is pretty straightforward, despite the crap midfield I can't see them dropping many points against Wolves, QPR, Fulham and Wigan, and they always seem to pick up wins even when they're playing poorly, so they'll be near the top of the table come the turn of the year no doubt. Surely then new players will be brought in, will laugh if this doesn't happen though.

Fellaini and Cahill are both better CMs, Arteta was too. I really hope Fergie has a better plan than signing a fourth-choice central midfielder from a mid-table side on the grounds that the English press got a bit excited about him when he had a decent run of performances a year or so ago.
I hear Denilson is available. Would let you have him for free as well. Would be great, Carrick and him could just pass the ball sideways to each other all day!

Fergies got faith in Cleverley, and I think he'd have been a regular starter if not for injury (whether or not he'd have been found out......)

Fletcher is a good squad player, nice to have as a +1 in the Midfield, and can give a bit of grit if needs (by grit I mean kick the **** out of a classier midfield)

Rodwell can't even get into a pretty poor Everton side at the moment. I don't think there's anyone available in the Premiership who can do much to solve our midfield problems, although not going in for Scott Parker is looking like a big mistake at the moment. I suspect it'll need to be an import job.
I think that's more to do with Fellaini's ability than Rodwell's inability.

And to be fair to him, he was dropped quite unfairly - got MOTM in the last game he started for Everton.
Rodwell was never dropped, he got injured in the second English game. Moyes plays Fellaini/Rodwell in the heart of midfield every single chance he gets.

Which really isn't Ferguson's style.

Since van Nistelrooy, I'm struggling to think of an established foreigner that Ferguson has signed from abroad. His big money signings since have tended to be players who have potential or players that have proven themselves to a degree in the Premier League.

Hargreaves the last one I can think of.

He hasn't broken the bank but he did pluck out guys like Evra and Vidic, could do with him pulling off some of that magic again.

United's average net transfer spend over the past seven years is about £8m per year. Any transfer dealings at United have to take into account the economic realities of the club.

Net spend is the most meaningless statistic in all of sport.

Mainly due to the sale of one player, yes.

In terms of real spend, they're well up to the top (and IMO are only in this strong a position because of the money they spent back in the early days of Taggart's reign)

Yes, that's my point. Although investment was very strong later in his reign as well (late nineties to early noughties. It's only dipped during the mid-nineties when the youth players broke through and in recent years when they have other considerations.

Not to me, it's a measure of the investment in the team relative to income generated.
Maybe it's of interest to those who like accounting. To those who like football it's just something that idiot fans bring up as a way of arguing that the success of someone else's club doesn't really count that much.

I usually find it's brought up by idiot fans to justify their manager wasting money in the transfer market eg. Andy Carroll. Liverpool getting £50m for Torres doesn't change the fact that Dalglish still chose to spend £35m of that on Carroll.

When did Wolves get so incompetent at defending? They were a nightmare to play last year, this year they're hardly even bothering to tackle. They haven't got much at the other end either so they could be in trouble if one of the division's other dire teams picks up a bit in the new year.
