As much as we can get. Aim to bat all day tomorrow and if we manage that (unlikely, but should be the goal) we will have a very nice score and two days to bowl the Aussies out.

Huge innings next up for Tim.
I think the real men of importance will be Martin and Boult. Australia's top 6 is stacked with lefties. If we're to scythe through them again, then those two will have to be at their best.

I meant huge innings for Southee in terms of himself. With Vettori to return, someone has to drop out and IF Boult or Dougeh produce matchwinning performances (or even just really good ones), Southee could be in some strife.

Yeah, I have to agree. I feel horrible for Timmeh, but the truth is he hasn't just failed to progress in test cricket, he's actually gone backwards a bit (less swing in particular). Really hoping he turns it around soon.

Nice one Kiwis. Kicking myself for electing to go to bed.

Will definitely be watching tonight, the match is set up brilliantly.

Yup, Southee doesn't appear to be mentally tough enough for Test cricket right now. This is not only demonstrated by his impatience with the ball but also his reluctant to get in behind the ball when batting. Needs to harder up.

So..... what sort of lead do you think we need people?

I'm thinking 350+ plus to really test the Aussies, but would settle for a 300 run lead.
A lot could depends on the weather. If the rest of the test is mostly sunny, then I think the pitch will start to really flatten out quite soon. It's already is looking pretty innocuous out there. So if that happens, I'd say NZ would want, as you said, 350+ to feel safe.

On the other hand, if the conditions stay overcast, then I reckon anything around 300 could be a really tricky total to chase. Our batsmen are absolutely dire against the moving ball these days, and a massive collapse is basically always on the cards.

Forecast for tommorow is apparently clearing rain during the morning, so if NZ can get through that period they have a damn good chance to post a very competitive total given they already lead by 153 runs.

Raised a loony theory with Athers today; Vettori opening the batting.

Would be so gun if he could pull it off. Might be a bridge too far though.

So what do we think of Guptill guys? Persist, or look elsewhere?

Not a huge amount of options really. Watling is probably next in line but we only just dropped him a few tests ago, and droppings are meant to send a message. It's also unfair to drop him for not producing then select him a couple of tests later and expect results.

McIntosh hasn't scored much this season, so picking him would be a hard ask for him.

Flynn has opened in FC before, but is injured.

Nicol scored a ton against a good attack on paper in the opening round.

Murdoch is a run machine on the scorecards but who knows what he is really like. I asked Athers (who has seen him bat) about him and he reckons it's too early.

The solution is we must select Pinga.

Oh, and I forgot to ask about our batting order. It's been shuffled around a bit lately. What do you guys think our 3-6 should be?

Would only shift the top order problems into lower order problems, while making one of your best batsmen in Vettori less effective. You need to find a better opener.

I think Williamson should return to no.3 for the home tests. Good call getting him out of the firing line in this test match (although Ryder going up instead has its own problems).

3. Williamson
4. Taylor
5. Ryder

Ryder should be our no.5 for years to come. But he needs to taken to one side by Wright for a talking to about his game if he keeps getting out to daft shots.

Meanwhile, give McCullum and Guptill the home summer and see what happens. This has been a tough two-test gig for openers.

Interesting.

You'd think one of Guptill/Ryder/Southee would have their spot on the line once Vettori is fit again.

So if you drop Guptill you'd have to open with who?
Ryder - not a fan of him opening in any form
Brownlie - no thanks
Young - no thanks
Vettori - yeah, I see how you came up with that theory as there is nobody else.

Should just reverse the order. All your decent bats get nosebleeds when they bat higher than 4, might as well start with McCullum at 4, Guptil at 5 etc.

I can see Dan's favourite cuts through gully and point getting him in trouble up the order, but then Vettori's entire technique shouldn't work, yet does. I'd be reluctant to elevate him higher than four because he's so valuable at 6-8. But if he did manage to pull off opening, our balance could be so awesome.

As things stand, three and four have been operating as openers at times. it has improved from the endless opener cycle with T Mac/McCullum/Guptill all managing varying degrees of success, but still...

I vote Pinga.

Imagine if Martin and Boult actually cobbled together a 20 run partnership (Marto with french cuts obvz). Would nearly be the best opening stand of the series.
