Lucas out for the season then, its fine though because they always have Meireles and Aquilani....

GFs favourite manager is back in the Premiership then. Seems slighlty odd that he left Aston Villa due to them seemingly being happy to be a mediocre Premiership side, just to join a mediocre side a year later. Was a fan as child which I didn't know so maybe that explains it.

Still Sunderland fans should be pretty happy with that, say what you want about him but he has never done a bad job, are saying he will not have any extra money but they normaly buy a **** load of players every summer so expect the same next season.

:(

Tbf, neither of them are defensive midfielders, but I get the gist.

Spearing should be servicable in that role, but we might need to spend in the window. Have recalled Shelvey too.

Meireles playing rt of role for Chelsea this year and Shelvey certainly no DM.

Feel really sorry for Lucas though, got so much criticism when he came over but things were going well for him of late and was very much part of Brazil's plans.

BARNES OUT
Steve Bruce always signed loads of players for Sunderland every window, but in the end he still ended up selling 31 and buying 26 in total. There's a misconception that he spent ****loads of money when in reality, he only did because his strikers kept leaving. His net spend was only 6m I think, and he had to rid himself of a lot of deadwood on big contracts left to him by Roy Keane.

In the end, I think he's far too vanilla as a manager and seems to have a habit of falling out with his best strikers. He had to go, if for nothing else, he kept giving the armband to Lee Cattermole ffs.

That does surprise me actually, still that is a very big turnover of players which is never likely to be a success. He still had a good deal more resources than clubs Sunderland curently share company with.

The Gyan thing was really odd, not sure who was to blame for that one, either way its hard to feel much sympathy given the number of clubs he has walked out on.

He's sucked when he's played there too. I didn't say Shelvey played there either. Scored some beautiful goals for Blackpool though, so I guess it's something to have some midfield depth, even if not directly applicable.

Was a harsh critic of Lucas, but he certainly made me change my opinion with his consistency and green polos. :)

He left Aston Villa because he'd spunked all of Lerner's money on average Premiership players and wasn't getting any more. He left Celtic in the same way. His MO is to sign obvious British talent at vastly inflated prices, build up a huge squad and bring in no money through sales, then leave when the bottomless pit of cash dries up. I'd be amazed if he's taken the Sunderland job without being promised a big wad of cash to spunk in January. The reason he's gone to a club like Sunderland after Villa is because he was found out at Villa - no club with any ambitions beyond the occasional 7th placed finish will touch him. At Celtic and Aston Villa, I'm pretty sure the number of signings he's made from outside Britain can be counted on one hand.

Sunderland vs Norwich will be interesting, doubt anyone will be able to tell the respective managers apart seeing as Paul Lambert's dress code and interview technique is basically a Martin O'Neill tribute act.

Hope Sunderland get relegated. O'Neill is a horrible, horrible ****.

Haha, just had a go at trying to work out ones that were signed from abroad...assumed Didier Agathe and Mo Sylla would have been....but turns out no.

The only signings I can think of he made from abroad were Zagorakis and Mancini when he was manager of Leicester.

Pegguy Arphexad being another notable mention, can't remember if he was the one who signed Pontus Kamark as well.....

Agathe was signed from Hibs and Sylla from St Johnstone.

For Celtic, I think I'm correct in saying that his only signings from abroad were Joos Valgaeren and Dianbobo Balde.
