The highlights I saw he did well, difficult to be critical of a guy who is batting with his side in trouble at 100-5 and he is still not out when play ends. He needs to dig in again today and when he has played a bit more and relaxes into his role in the side then the shots and rotation of the strike may come more easily.
Absolutely credit to him, he came it at a very difficult time and survived through to the premature close of play, that doesn't make him exempt from pointing out one or two things I believe (though what do I l know!) he could do better today.

Hopefully he gets stuck in today and averts any potential collapse that may occur.

I'd go along with that, be interesting to see how he bats if he is still in after 30 minutes today, will he play a few more shots etc...

At least he seems to value his wicket unlike some of the guys above him in the order.

Yes absolutely, it seems in his nature to err on the side of caution with his batting which is not a bad thing when you look at those that like to take a chance in the order above him.

Chappelli didn't find it difficult. Went into his rant about dotballs/rotating the strike.

ffs Ian, when you are 96/5 I don't think it's that big a deal. And oh, the RR is 3.5.

He sweats on that though. I swear he must specifically request shifts when certain batsmen are in so he can have that particular rant.

Just like his brother, he only has respect for naturally talented specialist cricketers who play positive cricket at all times. Sometimes - especially when you aren't a naturally flowing batsman, especially when you're playing your second Test, especially when aren't set yet and especially when your team is 99/5 - taking risks off good deliveries when the reward is only a single just isn't worth it. My gripe isn't even with him mentioning that a batsman needs to work on his rotation skills and develop that ability, because he doesn't do that; he says that the batsman should just start doing it when he's out there - to hell with whether he's good at it, if it's part of his game which got him to this level or not or even if it'll get him more runs before he gets out or not, he should just start doing it now and if it gets out well then that's okay because he got out the Chappell way!

Maybe if he respected the art of sitting on the match for small periods when it was difficult he wouldn't have undersold his talent so.

Valuing your wicket? There's an idea!
Yeah, guys like Cook and Trott did that last year in Australia, worked for them. Dunno why some others don't use the same policy.

I thought McCullum was fair enough to play shots as he was up against a couple of rookies and could have really put the Aussies under the pump, but after he got out Taylor and Ryder should have reigned it in a bit and not got out the way they did.

Yes I think the fact Brownlie was simply remaining at the crease was a bonus for NZ at that stage. I think he does need to rotate the strike better, but that was nowhere near as important at thast point as it was that he remained present in a partnership with Vettori.

The top order want shooting for some of their dismissals and most were set when they threw it away. NZ need to bat till lunch minimum, do that and score over 250 and they are still in the game as we all know as do the Aussies that their next collapse can happen at any time.

Vettori, what a guy. Almost always performs at some stage of a match with bat or ball. So underrated. Class act.
Yeah he's a grand cricketer.

I agree that the situation of the game has to be taken into account, I think Taylor as captain is more culpable than Ryder, the timing of his dismissal and the nature of the shot was far from what was required. i think Ryder's was the right shot, it was short and wide enough to climb into, it was just the execution that let him down, not so much the thought process.

You want your attacking players to retain that intent, but there are times when they need to dig in a little, especially on a pitch that offers something to the bowlers.

Criticising the Chappells for their views on cricketers is a bit like criticising a lion for wanting to kill you.

Yeah I don't think you can criticise Ryder for going after it. It was a long hop and deserved four.

Suprised to see Vettori's record with the bat against us isn't higher. Swear it feels like he is the one who resists every time, but he doesn't even have a ton against us.

Starc not getting enough credit for the McCullum dismissal IMO. Kept him quiet from over the stumps, went around and put one short but cramped him on the cut. Was well bowled
IMO.
