An effort to pick an All-time ODI XI

Anyone who picks Dean jones in their team in front of Ponting need their head read.

The game is faster, tougher and with improved scoring strike rates harder for the batsman. With Jones only having a SR of 72 goes to show that that comes nowhere to competing with Pontings 80.

Ponting is considered the best Aust batsman since Bradman and would be the first picked in any ODI team.

And no I'm not Australian, I'm a kiwi and but I'd love to have him in my team

Isn't Dean Jones average higher and a SR of 72 for DJ's era is very very good

Yes but One Day cricket even up to the early to mid 90s was very naive and slow. 72 is still not that fast and easier to score runs if you're not taking the risks.

Power plays and the like have only recently aided Ponting. jones of course was a good player but Ricky he ain't!

I rate Dean Jones very highly as an ODI batsman and generally pick him in an all time XI. Cricinfo has this to say about him:

Cricinfo said:
Dean Jones wrote the book on one-day cricket - literally. He played a new game in which he walked down the pitch to fast bowlers, ran frenetically between wickets and turned outfielding into an attacking occupation. He was a natural showman who was for a while as popular as any other player in Australia
He also left Ponting behind in this comparison. Not definitive by any means, but quite good.

My XI will be this:

Tendulkar, Jayasuriya, Richards, Jones, Abbas, Bevan, Dhoni, Akram, Garner, Muralitharan, McGrath

Jayasuriya the only pick I am not entirely convinced about. I pick him to provide a good 5th bowling option. Hadlee, Watson and Klusener could be alternatives.

The fact that Dean Jones might have re-defined One Day batting doesn't take away from Ponting's ability to perform those roles too, perhaps even better. The first person to do something isn't necessarily better than anyone else who does the same later.

Klusener in place of Jayasuriya will make this a great team...Partly because Dhoni at no. 7 won't be utilized fully; having him at no. 6 and Klusener at 7 will be perfect. If you need an opener (if you drop Jayasuriya i.e.), you can take someone like Lara dropping one among Jones, Abbas or Bevan.

An even better suggestion will be to keep both Jayasuriya and Klusener, dropping one of the middle-order batsmen. That'll enhance the bowling immensely, without hampering the batting much.

You what? Bearing in mind the increased scoring rates, Ponting's 80 is nowhere near as impressive as Jones' 72.

Average RPO in Jones' career - 4.40. This = a SR of 73.33. Jones was 72.56
Average RPO in Ponting's career - 4.86. This = a SR of 81. Ponting, at present, is 80.6.

Ponting averages 42.63, Jones 44.61. In the Jones era, the mean batting average was 28, in Ponting's 29.

The difference between average RPO and career SR (and career averages) is negligible. And calling an era 'naive and slow' is pretty dire to begin with.

EDIT: I will concede Ponting is the better player in PowerPlays, however. Although I'm sure Jones was far superior when it came to facing Abdul Qadir..

Mate we are talking about august company here. I'm not saying he can't play, I'm not saying he wasn't very good. I'm saying he doesn't belong in this company is all.
I agree with you. Flintoff was brought up because someone wanted a bowler with a 30+ average with the bat. IMO Flintoff's the best example of that type of player.

Whatever it takes!!!
I'll pick one among these two teams (or a combination of the two+Hadlee+Miandad, keeping the combination in mind):

Team 1:
Brian Lara
Sachin Tendulkar
Viv Richards*
Zaheer Abbas
Michael Bevan
Mahendra Dhoni+
Kapil Dev
Shaun Pollock
Wasim Akram
Joel Garner
Muttiah Muralitharan

Team 2:
Sanath Jayasuriya
Sachin Tendulkar
Viv Richards*
Ricky Ponting
Michael Bevan
Mahendra Dhoni+
Lance Klusener
Wasim Akram
Joel Garner
Muttiah Muralitharan
Glenn McGrath
Would go with weldone's Team 1 but with Ponting or Miandad instead of Zaheer Abbas and Warne instead of Kapil Dev and move up Pollock a spot. Heck, I may even play Hadlee or Imran ahead of Dev there.
