Is it too early to declare Dale Steyn as an all-time great?

You're one to talk. Have you gone through your own posts of late?

Got_Spin is a guy I actually like outside of this issue. You, on the other hand, have no redeeming qualities whatsoever in your stay on these forums.

Can Steyn be called an All time bowling great?

Steyn has consistenly been the best bowler in the world for quite some time now. How long before he is hailed at an bowling ATG?

We all know he is a great bowler.

Just asking if he can be counted among the best of the best - Malcom Marshall, Garner, Lilllee , Akram, Mc Grath, Ambrose league

Yes. In an era of alleged flat tracks, heavy bats, protective gear and generally described as batting friendly a bowler of the calibre of Steyn is equal, if not better than the names you have there. Steyn was even lethal in the sub continet tracks where Lille was pretty much absent.

His consistency and fitness are far superior than any other current bowler, he won't take too long to join the ATG list along with Marshall, Garner, Lilllee , Akram, Mc Grath, Ambrose, Walsh, etc.

The only problem in his way is the number of matches SA are playing:D

'Alltime great' is a subjective term anyway, so whatever. Its not like there's some hall of fame somewhere. Except in people's minds maybe.

If people are going to bring up the ludicrous "Dennis Lillee was **** in the subcontinent" argument then I'll just point out Steyn's less than stellar record in England.

I think if he stepped out in front of that hypothetical bus tomorrow he'd be certainly remembered as a great bowler based on what he's done so far. Superhuman strike rate.

Trouble is we don't know how the rest of his career will shape up yet. Could be another Waqar who went from deific to merely very good after his injury woes. Steyn has a quite similar MO, so...

Disappointing lack of a nickname for Steyn too. Going to start calling him Arthur, tbh.

Nah, I think he's shown enough over the past 18 months, where he's gone down on pace in general with his stock ball and used a change up-wards as variety, and seems to have a better way of coping when things aren't going his way with his preferred MO.

There's no doubt in my mind Steyn is an all time great. He has a fantastic record on flat modern day pitches, has an insane strike rate, and in comparison to other bowlers in his era, only James Anderson mk II and Zaheer Khan mk II hold a candle to him. Shane Bond could have been his equal or more, but we'll never know now.

He's done a great job. To rise from the background he hails from (borrowing shoes, pads and cricketing gear even to play cricket), to be considered as one of the greatest fast bowlers of this time, his rise has been phenomenal.

Whether he manages to perform as consistently as a McGrath, Kapil Dev, Waqar Younis, only time will tell.

His insane spell to Tendulkar et al at Cape Town last year was all mid-130s stuff IIRC. Just has such an awesome wrist/seam position for outswing that he'll take wickets even if he loses a yard or two from out-and-out-fast.

A few adjustments to get an inducker, as I've said many times now, and boy...
