This. Can't believe the only change we're looking like making willingly is to the bowling, having been bowled out for 47. Surely that camel's back has been well and truly broken by now.
I think the problem is there's only one reserve batsman on tour. Warner's gone over, but as Marsh is injured, it's still effectively only one.

The options seem to be a straight swap Khawaja for Marsh, or if you want to drop Ponting
something like:

Hughes
Warner
Khawaja
Watson
Clarke
Hussey

If they want to drop Hughes it would need to be:

Khawaja/ Watson
Hughes
Khawaja/Ponting
Ponting/ Watson
Clarke
Hussey

There aren't that many options on tour with the batting. There are more with the bowling.

The point is a good one though. The real drama is the batting, as it has been for several years.

I will be pretty annoyed if Cummins gets a gig over Copeland, assuming a change is made. Doesn't seem to have taken long for the obsession with pace over accuracy to return.

i know warner has had a huge start to the first class season but i think a combination with him and phillip might be a wee bit risky. it would be either 2/10 or 0/150. if that's the only cattle their is though...a shame marsh is injured. would have be good to see how he fared before our home summer.

Well Siddle/MJ has been a problem for awhile. One that I thought we fixed, and then we didn't, so it's hardly out there to make that change, and then what's the other change? Ponting ain't going. Haddin ain't going. You wanna drop Hughes? People in the team who have made tons more recently than Hughes: Clarke. Obviously not the best defence but I'd give him another test. basically we're gonna be limited in our options to change the team as long as we pledge not to drop Ponting. Upon doing that we shift Watson down to 4, bring in Warner/Usman. Or Ponting actually scores runs.

It's like the Gerrard/Lampard problem for England

either can be 'ok' if selected on their own but when you put them together it is a mess. Both can boss it for their domestic sides but fall short on the big stage, bar glimpses of brilliance which often tend to occur when the two aren't in combination. It took years for England to sort it out but luckily without garb friendly matches the selectors can't continue to ignore results, or can they?

Other than the Slater axing, big calls rarely get made on tour - the real big ones are made when the team is back in Australia or when a touring team or contract list is being announced. For that reason, Ponting will stay, and so I suspect will Johnson and Watson will stay opener. Usman for Marsh, and that's it, I reckon.

moreover, the reserves havent had any cricket for a couple of weeks - making Copeland and Cummins long shots in my view.

Don't forget Warnie in 99 in the WI too! also, in that 2001 Ashes it was quite a shock when Langer was axed for the 1st test, in favour of Martyn. Langer was the incumbent, didn't have a great tour to India but Martyn scored more runs in the lead up matches and booked his spot, i thought at the time it was massive to drop Langer who had been at 3 since October 1998 (approx).

Really hope they don't get too carried away and make wholesale changes for this test.

Partly because I don't trust Hilditch and it'd be just like him to sign off with a bang by making some spectaculalrly stupid change, And partly because as bad as the two second innings in Cape Town were, and as average as Johnson, Ponting and Haddin have been of late, it was only one day of cricket and I don't think massive changes are warranted. On the whole the team has appeared to be on the up since Clarke took over.

Bring Usman in for Marsh at the Wanderers and leave the rest the same. Then give the new selection panel a couple of weeks to make considered (and un-Hilditch-like) decisions on the problem areas (Ponting, Watson opening, Johnson, Siddle, Haddin).

You don't have the materials or technical expertise to carry out arson on such a large scale imo.

How boring! - stoning or burning effigies is so much more exciting.

It's always how it is isn't it. Batsmen get bundeled out for an embarrising score but it's somehow the bowlers fault. The precious batsmen couldn't have got out due to poor batting, it must have been a poor pitch, therefore why couldn't the bowlers bowl the opposition out for under 50 as well? Ridiculous!

Cummins has played three FC games, and had hot spots in his back after one of them.

Average of 47, I think.

Not only doesn't deserve to play, but is not physically ready.
