This is a novel way to solve the 5th-bowler vs 6th-batsman dillema: Don't have a wicketkeeper!
I cannot understand your fascination with N McCullum in the test side. He is surely not even in consideration. Even if we were touring the subcontinent and needed a second spinner he still wouldn't be it (though I don't know who would).
Dough Bracewell should grow into a respectable number 8 batsman; hopefully this puts your mind at ease about the NZ lower order.

Haha, haven't forgotten, just don't think there's any point discussing him as a possible option for tests. He doesn't want to do it, has knee problems and at the very least could not wicketkeep and open the batting. Would only consider it a one-off option if Young injured himself during a test match.

I wonder if either Wright or Taylor have the gonads to tell Ryder to get his fat ass fit, and properly, not just a couple of kg's lost doing boxing in the off season. If he was as fit as he should be he'd be bowling 135 easily, solving New Zealand's 5th bowling option.

Playing 4 pacers plus Vettori weakens the batting line-up, but Vettori should really be coming in at 6 anyway. Young at 7 followed by Southee and Bracewell is still pretty decent.

I'm going to day what we're all thinking.
There will be swing at Brisbane, and New Zealand will win a low scoring match. They will them proceed to hold on for a draw in the second test.
I've decided the Bahnz tactic of being so miserable anything good comes as a nice surprise, or the Indian anti-jinx tactic, suck. I'm going to try out the be so ****y it might come true tactic.

Wonder if Franklin has batted himself back into contention for the number 6 spot. Brownlie probably deserves another chance but Franklin's a much better bowling option and has been scoring runs for fun in the last few years, domestically at least. Arguably you could play both of them, with Franklin as a third seamer, but his bowling's probably not up to it these days.
And yes, I realise he's had chances there before, and had subsequently been thrown back on the scrapheap.

Nethula only played on turners last year iirc. Happy to be proven wrong.
Milne, Wheeler, Dougeh, Small, KNB will be the attack you would imagine, though with Dougeh's rise and Small being injured, Nethula definitely enters the picture along with Rance and this new Smidt guy I'm guessing.
Will have to wait and see.
Hopefully your lot get McKay back. Keeps him away from Australia.

Martin Crowe, New Zealand's best batsman, has made public his thoughts on the current Black Caps squad – good and bad.
In a series of comments on social-networking site Twitter on Sunday, Crowe revealed who he thought was up to test cricket and who wasn't.
Unsurprisingly, New Zealand's second-innings bowling hero Doug Bracewell received high praise, as did impressive No3 Kane Williamson. Jeetan Patel was on the other side of the ledger, as was BJ Watling.
Jesse Ryder came in for criticism from the 49-year-old, who made his club cricket comeback on Saturday.
"Bracewell is superb," Crowe said. "Great resolve & character in last session ystdy. Hardnosed pedigree, can bat & field. What a find for the long term."
He was impressed with Williamson's hunger for runs, saying he was "mentally focused" and had "superb footwork".
"Keep away from T20," he warned the 21-year-old, or maybe it was a message to the Black Caps selectors.
Crowe said Patel had been mishandled throughout his career and opined that the Wellington spinner's "confidence is now nil & results getting worse".
"A shame as he looked like he belonged a few yrs back."
He said Watling was out of his depth internationally, suggesting his Northern Districts team-mate Daniel Flynn and Otago's Neil Broom were better backup No 5s for Ryder, who he suggested should stick to test cricket.
"Ryder is not fit enough to play constant international schedule. I would leave him as test specialist to ensure he's fit & vital runs at 5," he tweeted.
Crowe was happy with Dean Brownlie's debut.
He said the middle-order batsman, who scored 63 in his first test innings, had temperament and "enough technique", but was too crease-bound against good attack.
"But looks like he belongs."
Daniel Vettori and Chris Martin received praise from Crowe, who said the pair should join with Bracewell and Tim Southee as the Black Caps attack against Australia next month.
Crowe said Ross Taylor needed to work harder at turning 50s into 100s.
Crowe also liked the look of Canterbury keeper Reece Young.
He said that if Young could continue to value his wicket and keep wickets efficiently, "he will be a sound contributor".
