WHAT!!??

What more could you want from a great batsman going head to head against great bowlers?
avg of 40 is actually a decent avg. (judging by a great batsman's standards)
avg of 45+ is very good
avg of 50+ is excellent.

If you can avg 45 against great bowling attacks, then you are bound to have an overall avg of well into the 50s...

If a great bowler allowed most great batsman of his era to avg 50+ against his line-up, then I'd find it hard to consider that bowler a genuine great TBH.

It's great v great. You don't expect either party to have a total dominance over the other!!
well I did say he did ok. But he wasn't great vs them either.

Another point was comparison with Kallis who did well vs Ambrose/Walsh in the low-scoring series in SA in 97 averaging 60+ in that series ...

Kallis vs Warne/Mcgrath

Just to add some more perspective,

since Aug 2001 ( from when batsmen vs bowler stats are available )

Kallis averages 46.6 in 12 tests involving Mcgrath/Warne

Batting records | Test matches | Cricinfo Statsguru | ESPN Cricinfo

He's scored 280 runs off 550 balls and got out 5 times in 24 innings vs warne.

He's scored 133 runs off 378 balls and got out 3 times in 18 innings vs mcgrath

That is 413 runs and got out 8 times , an average of 50+ vs them ......

Before that he averaged 23 in 6 tests

Batting records | Test matches | Cricinfo Statsguru | ESPN Cricinfo

He had a very poor series in SA vs them ( it was his 2nd test series ) , averaging just 9

Then an avg one in Aus in 97-98 , averaging 34, though he did score a match-saving century there ...

Mcgrath got out him out thrice in those 6 tests and warne twice

So if we make an assumption that he scored ~50 runs or thereabouts vs them combined in those 6 matches ( just an estimate , don't ask me why, its just rough)

He's scored around 460 runs and got out 13 times, an average of around 35.5 - which isn't as bad as it is made out to be .... especially vs warne. Mcgrath did have more of an edge vs him though .....

Hmm.. bit surprised that Pontings leading 7-0, even though i voted for him. Kallis does have better stats. Guess 2000-07 Ponting is someone everybody still has fond memories of

I really don't like the comparisons of the greats, because finally you cannot come to a conclusion, and comparing just on the basis of stats is even more ridiculous.
And how can you compare Kallis to Ponting?? Kallis has had that extra responsibility of bowling throughout his career, 3056 overs is huge. There is a huge difference when you come in to bat after just fielding, and when you come in to bat after bowling 15 to 20 overs. Kallis is and allrounder, he might not be a great bowler, but he has been good and useful to his team with that skill.
And he hasnt been selfish, selfish players throw away their wicket after getting to a good score, they don't really care for the result. If he starts to slog after getting to a good score, then i might consider him a bit selfish, but he plays his natural game throughout his innings.

Someone said he bowled a lot of overs against Zimbabawe and Bangladesh,
He has bowled just 94 overs against Bangladesh and 121 against Zimbabawe.
Majority of his bowling has been against the major international teams.

Who is better, I dont know, I love watching them both bat. But I think its ridiculous when you don't have an insight into certain things and just read the stats on cricinfo and start comparing. These guys are legends, I would rather admire them instead of comparing.

To me the difference was that Ponting could and did dominate attacks. Kallis, fair or not, has the reputation of playing for himself and his stats.
Both are ATG batsmen though, but the nod goes to Ponting.
Great article btw.

Forget his overall S/R - look at some specific times where his team NEEDED or would have greatly benefited from a faster scoring rate, and many of those times, Kallis didn't even seem to try. Obviously being selfish and scoring runs is mostly a positive, but not always. Dravid and Kallis have the same overall S/R but you never get the same sense from Dravid. However, even if you don't buy the premise that Kallis isn't a good 'team player', Ponting still comes out head on pure batting ability.

For some reason, I always think of Boycott when trying to compare Kallis to someone.

Look, I think Ponting is clearly a better batsman than Kallis overall, despite their respective averages. Just from watching them play.

For the same reason I reckon Tendulkar and Lara are better than Ponring, and always have, despite the latter averaging more at different times.

thought he had ridden out the storm yesterday and was going to get cracking after lunch. and then he plays around that ball.

let's see how kallis goes in his stint; while he doesn't have to face steyn, harris, johnson and co. can still prove a handful in terms of pure pace and thoughts of being clocked on the jaw in his last series might still be lurking at the back of his mind.

now it's upto the fatman to do his bit. read that yesterday was his first duck in 56 innings. not bad though it was a **** shot he got out to.
