Indian Domestic Season 2011/2012

Plenty of SMAT action today. All five zones will play. But don't expect any coverage at all on television or internet.

Bengal had an easy win against Assam, with no real batting highlight from either side in this low-scoring dig. Laxmi Ratan Shukla took three wickets for 20.

The Pathans are back. More or less. Smashed the Mumbai bowlers all around the park for 189 (Yusuf got 86, Irfan 39) at strike rates over 180. Neither were too good with the ball, though, with Irfan managing a little over seven, and Yusuf nine with a wicket. Every other Baroda bowler bar Swapnil Singh went for nine runs an over, so it's a decent return. Yusuf is celebrating his return to the Indian T20I squad. Irfan needs the whole season to return.

Saurashtra, who have recently defeated Maharashtra by 8 runs, have in their side Nayan Doshi, son of Dilip Doshi. He's one of the few star-sons or official-sons who actually performs. The strange thing about it is that he's registered as an England player, and spent a lot more time lately in England. That didn't stop Rajasthan from fielding him as a domestic player in the IPL, which was not touched at all.

Doshi, it seems, left his last team, Derby, in 2008, and the Cricinfo page doesn not have any clue about his next move. It seems he's back where he started, in Saurashtra, and has played a lot since his return. Maybe he's an Indian kolpak? Still significantly better than Shivlal Yadav Jr, Brijesh Patel Jr, Niranjan Shah Jr, and also Roger Binny Jr and Srikkanth Jr.

Robin Uthappa is eating up domestic attacks. He's second in the runs tally (225 to Dinesh Karthik's 235) but has only faced 99 balls! With 16 sixes and three fifties, he's had a fantastic league phase for his side. Had it not been for one defeat against Andhra, they'd be on top of the table. Also having a great series so far are Yusuf Pathan, Wasim Jaffer and Punjab's Mandeep Singh, less so Srikkanth Jr, one of the few performing star-sons. The top ten (and two less) still has some stragglers, and IPL hero Vijay struggles with his strike rate.

Among the bowlers, you have Pragyan Ojha, Luv Ablish, Yo Mahesh and Anand Rajan in the tops. Iqbal Abdulla isn't in the list, but may get a good game for that. All of these are good domestic T20I bowlers, who should have been in the reckoning for T20Is. Instead, we see space wasted on misfits like Jadeja, and though Bhajji and Kumar are largely good bowlers, they're not so in T20.

Don't think Ojha will play ahead of Ashwin in the T20is unfortunately, unless we go with two spinners and two pacers.

Yet another North Zone game is a low-scoring affair. Sehwag opened for Delhi, as also Nehra (with the ball), and both had decent knocks, but there were fewer than 200 runs scored in this encounter, whose result just came out. Most of the Rohtak and Jamshedpur games have had very low run aggregates.

Mandeep Singh and Sushant Marathe have impressed this time, as also Abhinav Bali, though a little less. More T20 specialists coming up.

Seeing the top Indian domestic players all at sea against serious pace, should India add overseas professionals to Ranji teams? The cricket improvement committee lost it when they decided against it.

Ranji starts tomorrow.
Saurashtra would be one team I would be following with keen interest.
Would love to have Pujara and Jadeja in the Indian test team in good form.

Pujara is still injured though isn't he?
The Saurashtra coach has said in an interview that the team is in full strength with all the injured players back. iirc, Pujara also gave an interview few days back saying something in a similar vein.

Wonder why he wasn't included in the squad for the WI series then, seems to have been overtaken by Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh

He wants to be match fit before donning international colours again. He has said that he is targeting the Australia series for his return.

Sriram playing for HP, Satish for Assam, Badani for Vidharba. Old TN hands being shunted around. Not sure why Tamilnadu can't keep veteran players. Only Sharath played until he was 35. All others were shown the door once they are 30. Pathetic.
