Well I thought Pakistan batted with more intent for much of today's innings (although the stats overall show only a tiny increase in the run rate compared to day two), thanks to the 70-run partnership between Asad Shafiq and Adnan Akmal. Neither finished with a mightily impressive strike rate, but the way they looked to play in accordance to the situation shows they have already learned lessons from the first Test.
Shafiq in particular impressed me, of course certain things such as the pitch and the SL attack have to be taken into consideration, but his strokeplay was decisive, and selection of shot generally very good. Akmal, a little more unorthodox, but equally effective today, and they looked to push the run rate up, the 70 run partnership coming at 3.71 rpo.
Pakistan are still in a strong position despite dogged resistance from Sanga and Paranavitana. It wasn't pretty, and certainly not easy for the two left-handers having to contend with the rough that has developed just outside their off stump, especially to Rehman that can land the ball that bit wider and into the middle of the foothole damage to turn it into the lefties.
This Test that at times has been played at a pedestrian pace, can absolutely build to a gripping finale, over the next two days, alternatively if SL losr Sanga and Mahela before they overturn the deficit, it could be over with time to spare for Pakistan.
Another good day in store tomorrow.
