Something to make Australians happy-Hilditch and Chappell got the chuck

Haha, that's absolute rubbish. You don't need to have played a sport at any level to understand it. It's not like they've hired someone who until they got the job though of insects chirping at night when he heard the word 'cricket.'
It's more nuanced than that. His job is to make sure that the selectors, captain, coach, CoE are all performing their roles well.

Now, it is reasonable to assume a background in cricket would be a big part of being able to discharge that brief.

There is nothing unreasonable about that point, and it is certainly not far-fetched or rubbish.

I refuse to hear bad words said about Justin "keep your eyes on the ball" Langer.

Jesus. Justin Langer continuously cops a bait in the set-up and CA is criticised for hiring too many former cricketers. CA hires someone from outside their usual cricle, and are criticised for hiring someone outside of cricket.

Sounds like he's done a good job in a similar role for a union side, so don't really see the issue here. It's not like he's the bloke in the nets with the players telling them to fix their back-lift.

Interesting appointment and one of those that you won't know has worked for a couple of years. I expect he has a plan he is being told to implement that they think would come better from an outsider not an old school member.

Be fascinating to watch how this pans out over time.

Former South African coach Mickey Arthur, now with Western Australia, ex-Sri Lankan coach and Australian servant Tom Moody, and long-time Australian Test batsman Justin Langer are also believed to be candidates.

coming back to this...

therein lies the problem with the review into Australian cricket

even if you come up with an outstanding review such as argus....a review only makes recommendations

it then falls to the likes of sutherland and the rest of the ca board to (a) pick and choose which recommendations to implement (b) oversee the implementation process

Australia news: Michael Clarke to play role in selecting Australia's coach | Australia Cricket News | ESPN Cricinfo

Not a huge wrap about Clarke's involvemnet, although it's probably somewhat necessary in a cricket coach selection due to their working relationship. I do like the part about using the firm from AFL to hire coaches - as the need to do it occurs much more regularly in AFL circles than in cricket.

And even in AFL, we've seen what happens when you have a board inexperienced in selecting a new coach having that responsibility (REFER: Matthew Knights).

Not sure how I feel about it. It kinda presupposes the call on the captain was the correct one (tbf, speaking as someone who can't stand Clarke, he has impressed so far) because bringing in "his man" as coach (or at least someone who bears his seal of approval) is going to strengthen his hand.

Cricket's hard to compare with other team sports (well, the ones I know anything about) because the captain is a more important figure and, conversely, the coach less so. In cricket the selection is still usually made by a committee (with possibly input from the coach but rarely the casting vote) but in association football and the rugby codes the picking and the tactics are the head coaches' alone.

Really don't think I like the implication that the captain would effectively be a more senior position than the coach.

There's history here isn't there? IIRC Waugh was heavily involved in Buchanan's appointment.

What's the consensus there then? My impression is Buchanan was, at best, tolerated by certain non-QLD quarters of the Australian dressing room.

Pretty sure the skipper generally is more powerful than the coach in most cricketing scenarios...

this has been basically how things have worked at least in aus cricket for a long, long time, in terms of actual power.

Give it to Rixon, Moody or Arthur.

Even consider Boof. But DON'T, for the love of god, appoint Langer!
