SL XI

Sanath Jayasuriya (LH, SLA)
Tillekaratne Dilshan (RH, OB)
Kumar Sangakkara (LH, wk)
Aravinda de Silva (RH, OB)
Arjuna Ranatunga (c, LH, RMF)
Russell Arnold (LH, OB)
Angelo Mathews (RH, RFM)
Rumesh Ratnayake (RH, RFM)
Chaminda Vaas (LH, LFM)
Lasith Malinga (RH, RF)
Muralidaran (RH, OB)
Jayawardena over Arnold any day of the week. You don't need so many bowling options, and Jayawardena is a much much better batsman in any position. It is safe to assume that he will be more than handy at no. 6 too (after his t20 exploits).

NZ ODI XI:

Glenn Turner
Nathan Astle
Andrew Jones
Martin Crowe (capt)
Bevan Congdon - odi av 56, list a 41
Chris Cairns
Chris Harris
Brendon McCullum (at 8!!!)
Sir Richard H
Daniel Vettori
Shane Bond

Unlucky players:

Fleming, Styris, Twose, Taylor (give him 2 years), Smith, Chatfield, Larsen, Pringle, Allot, Mills
I grudgingly conceed that Jones was quite a good test match player but he was a deadweight on the team's run rate in ODIs if I recall correctly.

Nah, Arnold was one hell of a finisher. Would have been perfect foil for de Silva, Ranatunga and Mathews to deal with. Very quick runner, exceptional fieldsman, and a canny cricket brain too. IIRC averages more than Jaya too.

Jayawardene's far too good a batsman to leave out, and I don't give a stuff what his average is. Should be in the top four anyway.

Keep it to only one of Arnold or Mathews I reckon. Probably fairer to leave Mathews out at this stage, he's got time to make his case.

Jayawardane is no way close to Jaysuriya, de Silva or Ranatunga as an ODI player. Simply he cannot get in to those three positions.

Jayawardene's performances in WC knockout games ( '07 semi, '11 final) means I'd rate him over Ranatunga as a batsman, IMO.

I think when you consider what Ranatunga did in the knock out games he faced with, the margin becomes thin. Made 50 on that rasping Culcutta turner, and then eviscerated Aussie attack in the final in 96.

Ranatunga averages 36 with the bat and scored @ SR of 79 in the era of '82 - '99, which is around SR of 85 these days. And those are the figures that Dilshan possesses, most attacking batsman of SL have now! And he has won many matches than Jayawardane, and played in a minnow team, most of his time.

Jayasuriya, Aravinda and Arjuna are ODI batting icons in SL. Sanga and Mahela has to do loads more work to bring out quality that above three provided.

Still doesn't explain why you've got Dilshan or Mathews ahead of Mahela.
Dilshan is a opener and has done well. He's better than other potential openers in Tharanga, Atapattu, Mahanama, Kaluwitharana, Dias, Wettamuni, Hathurusinghe and Samarasekara.

Mathews is the best batting all rounder we have, and has ability to use long handle, which Mahela will not be able to do at #7. Plus he's having one of the best ODI averages and a SR for for a Sri Lankan. Chandana, Dharmasena, Ravi Ratnayake are capable at 7, but they are more of bowling all rounders than batting all rounders.

Everybody likes Mahela's style and his charm. But he has underperformed massively in ODI cricket.

Well, if you're saying Dilshan is a better ODI opener than Mahela then I reckon we'll just have to leave it there.

Gautam Gambhir
Rahul Dravid
Azharuddin
Yuvraj Singh
+MS Dhoni
Kapil Dev
Anil Kumble
Zaheer Khan
Javagal Srinath

Reserves: Virender Sehwag, Suresh Raina, Ajit Agarkar, Harbhajan Singh

Gautam Gambhir included in the main XI as he avges 49 in run-chases, which is the 4th highest of all-time. Dhoni & Gambhir have been the 2 biggest reasons for India to win so many matches while chasing since 2006

Very few people picking Ajay Jadeja for India. I think he along with Yuvraj and Dhoni will make a superb team of finishers to compliment Tenudlkar, Ganguly and two middle order batsmen from Dravid, Azhar, Gambhir.

Miandad in first XI for me instead of Dravid.
also imo ganguly instead of jayasuriya.

edit: and as brilliant as murali is in tests and ODIs. IMO the best ODI spinner ever is saqlain. stats seem to support this as well. so switch them.

Oh wait, Zaheer Abbas has to be in first XI too. May be in place of Yuraj.

Between Murali and Saqlain I will take the former. Saqlain was sensational but for a much shorter period.

hang on

abbas or miandad in place of dravid.

dev in place of khan. their bowling in odis is comparable and one needs an explosive hitter down the order, not a plodder (i use the term loosely). no comparison on the fielding front.
