I really like the look of Bracewell tbh, bowls some nice out-swingers & can get it through in the early 140s. On top of this, he's potential a more than handy lower order batsman

So basically Bracewell selected on a hunch and not on what he has achieved so far then. Hope he comes off though as i like NZ and want them back stronger and punching above their weight.

I hope Bracewell comes off and can be a test bowler who will average at least 32 or 33.

I won't hope for anything more than that. We need a third bowler - would like to see him get a go.

As soon as I saw him and Adam Milne in that Champions League game I was really taken with Doug's action.

Best Wishes to him,

I am not confident about Dean Brownlie - I hope he does well.
He'll struggle early on, no doubt about it. Patience will be the key with Bracewell, much like England with Stuart Broad. It'll obviously be a lot touger to do so however with New Zealand being a far poorer team. He's not just going to come in and average 30 with bat and ball, the selectors have to realise this.

Hmmmm, I'd say his form in the emerging players tournament is why he's been selected. How much you value those games though I have no idea.

I don't think we've ever had a project who we have been patient with - I thought Flynn was going to be that man but they gave up on him. I hope they are patient with him though.

I don't like bringing a project into a side which needs as much quality right now as it can get, and I would have picked Boult. But since it is a CD player, I am quite happy to overlook cricketing wisdom.

We have had this discussion before Flem - I think we agreed the selectors can't really have a project. Because it is impossible to predict who will be the real deal and who is a Flynn. Even with Steve Waugh who Aussie used as a project (IMHO) they nearly ran out of patience with him when he was young and luckily he came good.

I think you could say Mills' ODI career fits that bill. He was a liability for a few years at the start, but we persevered and were rewarded.

Edit: Arguably McCullum too - averaged in the low to mid teens for his first two years IIRC.

Yeah, I was going to mention McCullum. Chris Cairns would be another, although that's going along way back now, very comparble to Bracewell however.

Can he truly bowl in the 140s - what game is this based on?

Mills and Styris too in ODIs - from memory both were poor for quite a while before they began to perform.

Even less impressed with Mills' test selection based on Howsie's figures of 3 FC matches in the last few years. Don't get me wrong - at his best Mills was a decent enough test bowler (think ThierryHenry posted some figures a while ago that were comparable to Chris Martin) - just doubt that he's anywhere near his best in FC at present. The reasoning would have been they wanted someone with international experience to counterbalance Bracewell, McKay & Southee. Wonder if O'Brien was available - he would have been a better choice.

Gagging for some cricket, even if it is against Zimbabwe.

I think Mills is in the squad in case they want to bat Vettori or Young at six and play five bowlers. From memory Mills had a pretty good season with the blade last season in FC cricket and the thought of a tail of Young-Southee-McKay-Boult-Martin was probably a bit much to bare.

Would rather they give Brownlie or Bracewell a go
