True, he criticised him for 'double dealing', but what was he meant to do? The Saints were always going to ramp up negotiations after the season finished. Was he meant to go to the Saints and tell them that he wanted to put contract talks on hold? Freo and Saints both finished their seasons at roughly the same time, and made offers at around the same time. It's untidy, not ideal, but I don't think it's double dealing. Moreover, my point is that human emotions come into it, and I'm sure Lyon was pretty miffed by the Saints' approach, and pretty happy to get headhunted by Freo. When people leave jobs it's never tidy, and there's often an element of playing orgainisations off against each other.

People mention how Brendan McCartney is one of the very few senior coaches in the AFL to have never played at the highest level.

What other senior coaches in the past also never played VFL/AFL football? Anyone know?

Neil Craig only ever played SANFL, however back there it was a little bit different, where the SANFL was seen to be the top level for South Australian footballers.

Neil Craig only played SAFL IIRC.

Also, Kevin Sheedy played for Richmond, and noone can ever class that as top level football.

Not really, bar Malthouse nobody remains in the AFL that is prepared to separate VFL and AFL history.

They need to look at a structural separation so that there is a governing body who set the rules and manage the game and expansion, and then a body which simply runs the individual comps. Would base the head office in Sydney but that idea would go down like a tonne of bricks in Melbourne no doubt

What exactly have they done wrong? Interstate teams can hardly cry that Melbourne teams are being treated better, because they most certainly are not.

Go to a Bulldog and Demon fan and say that the AFL is too Victoria-centric right now.

Pretty sure AFL is the best code in Australia at expanding.

Dominates Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia and the NT.

Making significant inroads into NSW and northern Queensland and south east Queensland is becoming AFL territory.

Outside of international expansion, I'm not sure what else you want them to do.

I don't see how, but if anything the only thing holding back football in SA is the SANFL, not the AFL.
