Greatest ever batsman with the tail?

iamdavid

International Debutant
You guys are too young.LOL Ken (slasher) Mackay. Without a doubt
Granted I've never seen him bat so I'm hardly qualified to comment. But out of curiosity what made this guy who averaged low-30s and never hit a test hundred "without a doubt" better at batting with the tail than the likes of Waugh, Border, Gilchrist, Lara, etc.

I was thinking Gilchrist straight away so suprised he has not had a mention yet.

Had some big lower order partnerships with the likes of warne, lee etc..

He was good, but not best ever. Hard to go past record of so many big innings batting with the tail. Many times he was not out at #3 with a nice ton against his name.

Mackay was your typical dour middle order batsman who was expected to get the team out of strife. His nickname "Slasher" originally came from some yobbo in the crowd and was meant sarcastically. H escored his runs slowly but could hit if he needed to. Probably his best remembered innings was in the drawn test of the 60/61 series in Adelaide and there is bound tobe a story of it somewhere on the net. His and Kline\s defiance is the stuff of test cricket history

Looks like Neil Harvey's grandson taught him how to use the internet..
:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

it's probably a fellow tailender tbh
Actually slasher was my first coach at club level:D

Me. Banged on 88 with a bloke at number nine who can't bat. Managed a single from one the last two balls for 12 straight overs. He made one.

:cool:

Especially good knock from you Burgey since tailenders back in the 40s weren't quite as good with the bat as they are nowadays.

Vettori. Tinted black glasses are on though, not actually sure how good he was with the tail, but he's certainly pulled us out of the **** a fair few times.

Really don't know how Laxman ever manages to string up so many partnership with tails considering his plan is give the strike to the tail ender as quickly as possible.
