Greatest ever One Day Innings

That 434 chase was easily among the 3 most exciting ODIs I have seen. I only saw the last 25 or so overs but it was thrill a minute. As others have said, if 400+ scores were routinely being set and chased, it wouldn't be special. But the fact that the second highest successful chase ODIs is under 350, does make that match special. Imagine the state of mind Saffers would have been at the half way stage and then to maintain an 8+ runs an over for 50 ****ing overs under that scoreboard pressure is bloody insane. I think that was really a great game of cricket though we don't want that to happen everyday.

I remember the cricinfo headline. "SA win the greatest game". Indeed, you can say that it was arguably the greatest ODI game ever.

I remember a 100 from Mahela a year or two back which was perfectly paced and beautifully played. Started off slow, worked the ball into gaps, played risk free cricket and accelerated in the end to get to a run a ball and posting a match winning knock. Was the best example I've seen so far of how to pace an innings. Can't remember who it was against, probably India considering how often we played them over the last couple of years or so.

Is this gem in Dambulla the one you are talking about?

Eoin Morgan played two similar superbly timed innings last summer, one against Australia and one against Pakistan. The one against Australia was a perfectly paced chase where he got his hundred and hit the winning runs in the same shot. By no means one of the greatest of all time (probably something Bevan could've pulled off in his sleep) but certainly one of the best I've seen by an Englishman:

1st ODI: England v Australia at Southampton, Jun 22, 2010 | Cricket Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo

Keeping it on a strictly biased note, Strauss' 158 is definitely the best ODI innings by an Englishman that I've seen. The ODI innings of a lifetime for a player who had never been considered ODI standard, against India, in India, overshadowing Tendulkar, nearly pulling of a huge chase, and on the big stage of the World Cup. Even though he was caught behind twice (you've got to ****ing appeal you know) it was majestic:

11th Match, Group B: India v England at Bangalore, Feb 27, 2011 | Cricket Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo

(Also contained the best bowling performance by an Englishmen that I've seen - Brez 5fer on a road against that lineup at a good econ. WAG)

1st ODI: England v West Indies at Manchester, May 31, 1984 | Cricket Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo - Sir Viv Richards 189 VS England,
No words to describe this one.

5th ODI: South Africa v India at Centurion, Jan 23, 2011 | Cricket Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo - Yusuf Pathna's Blazing 105 off 70 balls against SA in SA.
(See the whole match if possible, this century was againt the bowling lineup of Steyn, Morkel, Tsotsobe, Botha and others, see how Yusuf paced his innings and was giving the bowlers a hard time, counter attacking them on a pitch that was assisting the fast bowlers)

4th QF: Australia v New Zealand at Chennai, Mar 11, 1996 | Cricket Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo - Chris Harris's 130 vs Aus in 1996 WC
(I don't know if all will agree, but I would rate this one aswell as one of the top ODI innings anyday)

His 07 SF knock is the one of the best world cup innings I've seen (by extension one of the best ODI innings)... What a knock it was! Beautifully paced culminating in a thumping climax.

As for me,

1. Sachin's 175 vs Aus at Hyd. At 37, he's atlas again. That we lost by 2 runs added to the overall charm of it.
2. Sachin's 200. Broke a long standing record. Came against a good bowling attack.
3. Viv Richards 180
4. Kapil Dev's 175

Bevan in 2003 WC. Against England was it? Was an awesome partnership with Bichel to see Australia for 8 down around 100 and taking them to 200 odd. Can't remember the exact scores
