Greatest ever One Day Innings

OMM!

U19 12th Man
Probably been mentioned, but Bevan's 185* against the Asia XI for Rest of the World XI.

But for Andy Caddick's stupidness, he'd have taken them single-handedly to a draw from nowhere.

And it was against an attack of Akram, Vaas, Murali, Kumble and Razzaq!

The reason why many of Sachin's knocks are not mentioned here :(

It pains me to say it, but I think Kevin O'Brien's 113 from 63 , despite an overly relaxed bowling attack is one of the best One-Day innings ever.

Surely..Gambhir's 97 and Dhoni's 91* in the same match in WC Final!!!
Yuvraj's 56* against Ozzies in QF!!
they were not even the best knocks in that particular match, has to be that Bevan knock against NZ in the early 2000's.

Sir Viv Richards 189 vs England,Texaco Trophy - 1st ODI at Old Trafford
Dont have any words for this innings, Please don't watch this innings in highlights, watch the full match and you will understand the importance of this innings. 189 is such a big score even these days, I wonder what it was like in that era. The opposition bowled extremely well in that match, but they couldn't unsettle Viv at all, it looked too easy when he batted, he didn't have to work too hard for his runs. There are very few players who can tear apart bowling attacks like he did.

Yusuf pathan 105 off 70 balls vs South Africa at Centurion,
It was against the in-form South African bowling lineup of Steyn, Morkel, Tsotsotbe, Botha, etc.
No other Indian batsmen were able to play the South African bowlers with comfort in that series, they were just dancing against the pace bowlers,
chasing a target of 264(D/L Method) India were reduced to 62 for 5 in 13 overs when Yusuf came in to bat,and slumped to 120 for 8, wickets kept tumbling,
But Yusuf at the other end was fighting like a spartan, he was hit by a fierce Dale Steyn bouncer in that innings and was in pain, but he went on to hit 8 sixes and 8 fours and dominated the South African bowlers.
He took India to 234, though India lost that match, but the innings by Yusuf Pathan would standout as one of the best I have seen.

Kevin Pietersen 91 not out(65 balls) against Australia in NatWest Series - 3rd match (2005) at Bristol, England were chasing 253 batting second,
Pietersen was just excellent, I don't recall any similar innings in that time where someone would just give it back to the Aussie bowlers in such a fashion, he scored 4 sixes and 8 fours in the innings, he didn't come in and just wack the ball around, he counter attacked the bowlers and planned his innings really well as the wickets kept tumbling on the other end and took England to victory. Brilliant batting from someone who was just playing his 10th ODI innings and his 1st against Australia at that time.

My first day on cricket web,
My answer would be Sunil Gavaskar's 34 in 174 balls against England at Lords,
can anyone play a similar innings? hehehehe

:D

Good first post. Connoisseurs of classical batting maintain that his forward defensive was incomparable that day.

This match-winning Chris Cairns gem in the VB series.

Btw, I have hardly watched ODIs since the 434/438 catastrophe, so could have missed out some very good recent knocks.

Sir Viv Richards 189 would be the best,
I think Chris Harris's 130 in 1996 WC quarter final against Australia
and Yusuf Pathan's 105 off 70 balls against Steyn, Morkel, Tsotsotbe, Botha, etc. in SA would also be right there for me.

For me Gibbs' 175 against Australia at the Wanderers in 2006 is the best I've seen. Leading a chase of 434 (Which had already smashed the previous best) and after an early wicket to do what he did is quite incredible. When Ponting got out for 164 in the first innings. The commentators were saying that there would never be a better ODI innings, bet they didn't think they' would be having to retract their words so soon.

I remember that match like it was yesterday. Suffice to say that it left a very deep psychological scar that I'll take with me to my grave.
One match yielding almost 900 runs is ridiculous and in a sense, sums up everything wrong with the 'gladiatorial' contest that LOI cricket had turned into. That was in 2006 and things haven't improved too much five years down the line.

With all due respect to Ponting's and Gibbs' superb strokeplay, there was no semblance of a contest on the field out there. The bat and the ball were so woefully mismatched that anyone who has ever bowled a ball in his life would have cringed while watching the loot-fest from his sofa. I did! :ranting:

That match was a run fest right from the start though, the first 20 overs we were somewhat playing normally, but Punter started really going for it any by the 30th over we had scored heaps. Insane though, nice for a one off match to be so run heavy, it would be boring if it was happening so many times a year.

I admit the 400 match would be boring if it happened regularly. But the fact that nothing like that had happened before made it so thrilling.
