I hope Jesse Ryder is watching Cook tonight. Both players are very capable of stringing long innings together all in a row but Cook has the fitness required to prevent hamstring injuries and the other problems that have plagued poor old Jess.

(I realize this is Cook's first big innings in the series, but taking into account his recent form as a whole...)

Lets say something amazing happens and these two bat until tea and lets say England plan to declare with an hour of play left.

If one got out would they send Ravi in for an hour or so? He would be on a hiding to nothing as he couldnt get a decent score and could easily get a good one. A no win situation for him but then again, why would you hide a front line batsman?

Yeah, I've seen Pietersen score a grand total of I think 3 from 14 balls, across about 7 Tests or so

Also never saw Freddie bat. Would have done at Edgbaston 09 as he was due in after two more wickets at the start of play but it rained all day. He played a beautiful 70-odd the next day.

The way I see it, Bopara is in until Trott returns. If he forces his way into serious contention for a spot through weight of test runs while Trott is gone then that's just a bonus.

I would send him out, give him his job, see how he goes. England were eyeing him up as an ODI finisher a few years back so I presume he can hit a long ball.

It's kind of sad that when facing an attack like this, you never know whether NZ batsmen would boost their averages on junkfood bowling or get ****y and get caught on the boundary.

Actually, we know the answer already. When we toured India we drew the tests Zaheer played (and almost won one) then collapsed in a heap when Zaheer missed one. *facepalm*

We did bowl them out for 240-odd in the first innings though

Plus we had like a 200+ lead on the first innings. England could get 1000 if they wanted to.
