If I'm the fielding captain, with my best bowler crocked, the main wicket taker for the innings resting because he's just bowled 40 overs and the opposition have 478 on the board, with one of their top batsman having just made a double ton and the scoreboard rocking at over 6 an over, I'd welcome a declaration. The last thing I'd want to do is be made to bowl another 6 or so overs.
That's because, as captain, you won't be batting that night.

Right now draw has got to be favourite, very difficult to see strauss giving india more than 3 1/2 sessions to bat if there is a declaration scenario. England needed to score at about 3 an over, ideally faster, going at about 2.5 now, 5 down already and about 120 runs shy (at least) of they want to be, so probably not going to accelerate too much. Draw got to be most likely scenario.

Not Terrible
Making the opener's have to face two opening spells would undoubtedly give them more to worry about than just the one on the morning of the next day.

Mate you cannot win a game in 10 overs irrespective of the time of the match. The point is of test cricket is that each 10 over spell (or each over or each ball) you build and put yourself in a better position in the game. Whether that starts the evening on day 2 or the morning of day 3 is irrelevant.

I cant think of why any normal captain would rather Pietersen smacking them about all over the park while steadily putting them out of the game over a declaration that gives them a lower target to reach and gives them a chance in the game.
You can't bowl a team out in ten overs, but you can pick up 2-3 wickets easily after a team has been in the field all day and their concentration is waivering. The best the batting team can hope for is making 30 or so runs, whereas you can have them 3 for nothing.

Also the fact that they have to start again the next morning is also a tough thing.

This has been made too easy since lunch. Sharma should have been given a 3 or 4 over spell straight away to try and get a couple more wickets. As it is these two look comfortable apart from the odd one spitting from Harby which will interest Swann anyway.

Scoring at over 3 an over in this partnership and once the lead is over 320 or so I think they will really get a shift on. Plenty of batting to come and they can hit too. England to win this game for me.

hahahaha, you're one of those ****s. Hate you now, tbh.

"Come on, young fella, get out there. It's only an over or two. It's character building!"

And already Sharma seems to have lost a little extra zip he had before lunch.

Hmm - there's a long way to go before that's the case. Especially after what we saw before lunch.

This point of yours is applicable at any point of the test match.

They have to start again after each session too. Granted that a new day is not the same as coming back after 40 mins or so, but much like batsmen, bowlers also need to come back the next day and re-adjust their radar and get themselves attuned to the conditions again. I just think that any benefit gained comes at the cost of the advantage that you have just tossed away .
