This whole philosophy of lets get them in to bat for a few overs at the end of the day is a rather absurd one and possibly the worst piece of psychological insight that anyone came up with.
If you have the chance to bat someone out of the game in the first innings of a test match, you always take it.
As Richie Benaud so often says, as a captain you should look to do what the opposition least want you to do. And that is having to face a 10 over spell where you cannot win the game, just lose it.

It's because he bowled for almost all of the morning session. India only get one shot because England are only one partnership away from regaining total control, so they should be trying to get him on anyway, somehow, even if it's only for three or four overs. But then we don't know what Ishant's physical condition is.
He is going to have to bowl sooner or later so might as well bowl him now.

I guess the thinking is Praveen to get Morgan first hopefully and then bowl Sharma as he is way better to righties.

Considering the way the two teams are playing in this Test neither of them look fit for the No.1 position.Dropped catches, wayward throws, poor shots , wooden feet and what else?.Is this Test cricket?I think even now Australia and South Africa are better teams than England or India
I have a feeling this may be linked to the fact that you are in fact a moron.

All the more reason to give him a couple after lunch and see what happens. If he's feeling the pinch, take him off and give him a spell (dunno why he'd need one after lunch, though). If not, let him bowl himself into the ground if he has to. No ****, the best quicks, if they're in the flow, you just try getting the ball off them. We obviously don't know the story, though.

Been a nice counter since lunch by England. Pressure has eased and it is now almost a case of questioning how many runs are needed before declaring rather than worrying if we'll have enough before being bowled out.

If only we had recent evidence of a contest between England and Australia. Ah well.

AWTA. Doesn't work that often but when it does, can set you up massively.

Disagree, totally, KP and Tremlett should have just been told to give it a whack, chances are they'd of got out or added 30 or 40 more quickly, which could have made all the difference. I don't much like declarations. I said it before the 5-60 odd too. Always likely with England after all, as I'm sure you know.
Yeah but thats because you're English and frankly, backing yourselves is anathema to your cricketing culture through history. The best sides back themselves. It's Lord's ffs. Taking wickets is a premium and it's been a road for more than a decade.

If you want to captain on the basis you may end up 5-50 in your second innings at this venue, you should give up any pretense to being the number one team in world cricket.

Wow! With 2.5 bowlers a really impressive result! What if Zak was up and running!!! We'd have been already batting towards victory...

On a more serious note, why the **** Ishant didn't bowl like this in the first innings??? So bloody frustrating.

If I'm the fielding captain, with my best bowler crocked, the main wicket taker for the innings resting because he's just bowled 40 overs and the opposition have 478 on the board, with one of their top batsman having just made a double ton and the scoreboard rocking at over 6 an over, I'd welcome a declaration. The last thing I'd want to do is be made to bowl another 6 or so overs.

At any level, as an opener, it's the last thing you want to have to do.

Mm, borne out of two good captaincy maxims - do what the opponent least likes and do things where you have little to lose and lots to gain. I'm fair enough with it, tbh.

Mate you cannot win a game in 10 overs irrespective of the time of the match. The point is of test cricket is that each 10 over spell (or each over or each ball) you build and put yourself in a better position in the game. Whether that starts the evening on day 2 or the morning of day 3 is irrelevant.

I cant think of why any normal captain would rather Pietersen smacking them about all over the park while steadily putting them out of the game over a declaration that gives them a lower target to reach and gives them a chance in the game.
