*Official* First Test at Lord's

Yeah but it works the other way too. If they batted reasonably this innings and India manage to draw the Test 8 or 9 down, people will complain that they batted too long in the first innings.

5/260 still sees England in the box seat, but with 170 overs still left to be bowled in this Test it really could go any way. Awesome start to the series so far.
Ugh. No they wouldn't because they were scoring a lot faster at the end of the first innings than they are now. With an extra 50 run lead they'd have batted with more freedom in this innings as well.

Err no, because if you bat longer in the first innings, you can just declare earlier in the second should it come to that. In fact, if they'd managed to put on another partnership of any substance they might not have needed to bat a second time at all. All the declaration did was expose them to the possibility of this happening; it didn't actually give them any more time to win at all, because they hadn't begun to approach the point where India could bat out the rest of the game without making England bat again. It was just psychological bull**** that always had no real upside at all.

That's odd. Next he'll be bringing on Mike Hussey at the other end .
Haha, I was gonna go for the Ponting comparison as well.

Calculated risk though, could pick up a cheap wicket if Prior or Morgan drop their concentration against him.

Has to be an over-rate thing, or it is one of the worst pieces of captaincy in recent memory.

Or it might just pay off and make us all look silly.

The benefits of hindsight hey. Of course if England had of gotten a wicket or two at the end of day 2 the people in your corner wouldn't be voicing this opinion.

And how can you say your last sentence with such certainty? England could quite conceivably not have gotten India out as quickly if India started the innings on day 3 and if England batted with more freedom this innings they could easily have lost their wickets quicker.

Too many ifs and buts.

I disagreed with the declaration for the reasons mentioned, i.e. it's just as attacking to be scoring quickly in the first innings.

However, it clearly wouldn't have made that much of a difference compared to other things. For one, if we'd held our catches - catches ffs - we'd not even be batting. We can gripe at all these things if we like.

Okay now I'm just confused. Must be an end change but surely Sharma was bowling from the best end?
