ICC Greatest Test Team

quite convenient to forget that those two have some of the highest percentage of batsmen bowled out too.........of course the pakistani umpires were helping them to bowl the batsmen out as well 8-)
Didn't mean it quite like that. Just was trying to show percentage wise they really didnt depend on their fielders as much as the w.i or aussie quicks. Plus waqar had the same fielders and had a higher percentage of top order batsmen dismissed.

No offence intended.

He could do with the ball what most bowlers would dream of (despite the fact that those skills did not get him as many wickets) and hence his peers like Ambrose and Donald rated him very highly as well.
huh? Don't care how the wickets come as long as they come.
There were 4-5 fast bowlers of Wasim's own generation that did a better job of doing this than him.

errr.....I think you missed the point. The discussion was what could be the possible reasons that Wasim was rated so highly?

Back to topic though. When Bradman selected his all-time team he made a list of three players for each position as a short list and then narrowed it down. here's mine. Openers Len Hutton, Jack Hobbs, Barry Richards, Sunil Gavaskar, Virender Sehwag, Gordon Greenidge (Victor Trumper)
No Sutcliffe! Was that intentional?

Also Wasim is rated very highly because fast bowling is also about skill and wasim was a very skilled practitioner of the art. He could do with the ball what most bowlers would dream of (despite the fact that those skills did not get him as many wickets) and hence his peers like Ambrose and Donald rated him very highly as well.
That's a fair point. Subconsciously, most people tend to rate these more "skilled" players higher. Players who make their respective art seem laughably easy. Even though they may not have been as effective as some of their less gifted but more disciplined peers.

The two Pakistani pacemen Imran and Wasim provide the perfect example of this.

Yeah. Imran and Wasim are good examples. Imran probably the better bowler in terms of getting wickets but Wasim more skilled with the ball in terms having a vast repertoire and most people in Pakistan (that I know of) tend to rate Wasim higher.

Post 1920 because I don't have reasonably good knowledge of the less popular cricketers of the period before that

Herbert Sutcliffe
Jack Hobbs
Donald Bradman
Wally Hammond
George Headley
Adam Gilchrist
Kieth Miller
Malcolm Marshall
Fred Trueman
Glen McGrath
Muttiah Muralidaran

ftr. I think Imran's a better cricketer but Miller's better for the balance for the side. Pretty crappy system, It must be repeated.

Herbert Sutcliffe
Jack Hobbs
Donald Bradman
Wally Hammond
Garry Sobers
Adam Gilchrist
Kieth Miller
Imran Khan
Richard Hadlee
Shaun Pollock
Muttiah Muralitharan

would be my AT XI without restrictions.
awesome team atXI personally i might take laker instead of murali but it looks great

Virender Sehwag, Sunil Gavaskar, Donald Bradman, Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Kapil Dev, Adam Gilchrist (wk), Shane Warne, Wasim Akram, Curtly Ambrose, Glenn McGrath
Decent list but the biggest problem in there is Sehwag. He is in no way an all time best opener. The list looks like it was based on popularity.

hahahahahahahahaha

that's ridiculous tstl.

agree it's a good step to acknowledge the body of work of modern players instead of blindly going behind obscure incomparable cricketers pre war, but definitely sir jack should've made ahead of sehwag.

kapil's is itstl. would definitely rank imran ahead of him. sobers though would make my list for team balance.

wasim and no marshall is a big joke. biiig fan of wasim but marshall's a class higher. mcgrath got picked, yeah so happy.
