Iain O'Brien reveals he suffers from depression

"A couple of cricketers over here, once they'd finished playing county cricket, didn't know what to do with themselves so they committed suicide. I don't want to be one of those statistics. I don't want this to fester away either. I've never been quite that low but I've certainly been on the way to being that low. I don't want to deal with that. I don't want my wife and my daughter to deal with me like that."

:( Must be horrible. Good luck to the great man. One of the most popular NZ cricketers, certainly on this board.

I know it's not an original thought, but there definitely seems to be far more of a correlation between cricket and depression than other major sports.

Wish Iain all the best; always comes across in interviews and his (excellent) blog as an all-round sweetheart. Without wishing to be too facile, I dare say the way he's been pissed about by the ECB over the past couple of years haven't helped either.

Scott Styris once described cricket as a game where you're going to fail a lot more often than you're going to succeed, and you can see his point. Bowlers get hit for 4's a lot more than they take wickets, and most batsmen will fail to reach 20 a lot more often in their careers than they will pass 100. When you throw in the fact that sport fans have short memories, I can imagine cricket can really take it's toll on people who are vulnerable to depression. Good luck to Iain, a funny and gregarious fellow, and a guy who genuinely seemed to cherish playing for his country. I wish him well.

Plus you can often be touring in foreign countries for months away at a time, without your family. Must be tough.

All the best to him tho, seems like a good guy.

Is a big problem in AFL actually.

Sad news, speaking about it will help though, so well done.

Depression is hell, but I suspect the reason why so many cricketers admit to it has less to do with the nature of the game and more to do with the nature of cricketers themselves - more intelligent, articulate and open-minded than players of other sports.

Had some experience with this myself, worst thing ever. Don't think its caused by professional cricket, at least in his case, it sounds like something he's had for a while.

There are ways to treat it these days so there's really no reason at all to keep quiet. Good on IOB

Poor bloke, hope he gets through it. :(

Cricketers don't have higher rates of depression than those in other sports, but (just a theory) they tend to speak more openly about it than other sportspeople do.

I thought cricket was the leading sport for depression according to a study?

Possibly so (never heard of the study but will take your word for it), but those types of studies are flawed because they only count the people who have 'admitted' to having depression.

wellAlbidarned's point is that the rate of known depression may be higher, but that doesn't mean it's higher than other sports.
