If he had played for India instead of Australia, do you think India would have been world number 1 at any stage during the golden period?McGrath's bowling > Everyone else's everything.

Yes. Up until around 2001-2002, India's batting bar 1-2 players was terrible overseas as well, so probably around 2003-2004ish there was a real good chance I think. If he had played for India instead of Australia, do you think India would have been world number 1 at any stage during the golden period?
A very interesting question. If he had played for India instead of Australia, do you think India would have been world number 1 at any stage during the golden period?
Was probably doing him a bit of a disservice there but the SA bottling thing only applies to ODIs (WCs) TBF. In Tests, Pollock's stats are very comparable to Wasim's.Of course it's not as simple as that but it's not like Akram is like Pollock or any of the South Africans and had a history of bottling is it? Think you're doing him a disservice by suggesting that McGrath was far more likely to raise his game, Akram won/saved plenty of games for Pakistan. Including games against Australia.
I mean his first Test hundred came when Pakistan were effectively 0/5 in the second innings against Australia, he managed to put on 200 with Imran and save the game basically. Meaning Pakistan still had a chance at levelling the series.
What? SA have bottled it in tests as well...Was probably doing him a bit of a disservice there but the SA bottling thing only applies to ODIs (WCs) TBF. In Tests, Pollock's stats are very comparable to Wasim's.
Dunno, just feel McGrath's better than his peers by a small but definite margin, and it's hard to define it by numbers.
Hmm... they just didn't turn up at times against Australia after talking themselves up. I guess you could call that bottling in a way. What? SA have bottled it in tests as well...
hmmm I do get the feeling that Wasim being undersold here as a cricketer. He could do pretty much everything with the ball although as a bowler McGrath takes it. and wasim was a better fielder too. Batting of course no comparison.I think in any situation if am presented with a choice between selecting Wasim and McGrath, I'd have to go for the latter. I know Wasim's batting puts him slightly ahead in terms of allround capabilities, but the incremental gain from McGrath's bowling more than nullifies that. Pigeon is an absolute absolute legend. wasim merely a legend.
but then pakistan didn't turn up at lots of places. if the saffers bottled it in tests, all countries did...Hmm... they just didn't turn up at times against Australia after talking themselves up. I guess you could call that bottling in a way.
What about their home record? SA choking has existed since their first test from readmission against the Windies.Hmm... they just didn't turn up at times against Australia after talking themselves up. I guess you could call that bottling in a way.
McGrath wasn't playing for us in that series, out of interest.Quite possibly. Most likely wouldve beaten Australia on that 03/04 tour with a better opening bowler. We plundered many runs off Nehra, Pathan, Agarkar etc, Ponting feasted. Australia was a much more fearsome team with McGrath in it, im 100% convinced of that. Warne could do anything but he needed McGrath, maybe just a little.....
There are primarily two things here...hmmm I do get the feeling that Wasim being undersold here as a cricketer. He could do pretty much everything with the ball although as a bowler McGrath takes it. and wasim was a better fielder too. Batting of course no comparison.
So it all boils down to how much of a difference there really was between the bowling of the two. Was it substantial enough????
