Does Kevin Pietersen deserve the axe in ODIs?

should KP be axed from ODIs?

Yes, but if he does get axed, we all know it will be Bopara to replace him which isn't really an improvement!

When Bopara inevitably fails, we will no doubt recall KP as that's how English cricket works!

Yes, to be honest he has been very unimpressive.
Ian Bell in his position is a better player and he is capable of steadying the innings unlike Pieterson who has now become more of a slogger.

Based on what?
I have an inner feeling that Ian Bell can capitalize the early over better than Kevin Pieterson and he hasn't been given chances in top order.
He usually comes in at 5,6 which means England is either collapsing or he has to slog.
I feel like he has the talent but he needs time to settle down which he is not getting at 5th or 6th batting position.

Again I find myself having to say that different formats are not different sports. KP playing just Tests and T20 (because those are the formats where the scores happened to have come during this inconsistent period) doesn't make sense.

Also, the fact that two years ago KP was the best one-day batsman in the world and the best one-day batsman England had ever had by a massive margin is perhaps enough to give him some leeway.

Dunno, maybe I'm too easily pleased.

I agree with you, we all know he has gone through a bad time of it, not just in 50 over cricket but also test, but he seems to be putting that behind him. You can see, that he's hitting the ball well and seems in good form and I personally think he just needs a good score and that will do hm no end of good. Obviously the sooner the better and preferably this series.
Like someone else said if he goes, means Bopara returns, or moving Bell up the order, then we'd have a top order of Cook, Trott and Bell, which is asking for trouble imo.
Bell has a worse strike rate than Trott , it's down at 72, which goes unnoticed compared to how much bad press Trott gets.

don't care about the rankings, KP's been on a downward trend since the 2007 WC. Indeed it was 2009 when talk started about his form in ODers

Yeah, Pietersen should be in more due to his perceived threat (that he can really win a match by himself), and lack of options, than anything else. Performance-wise, he really hasn't delivered in the last couple of years. I guess 2011 is an improvement though, averaging nearly 30. Kind of like Sehwag getting an extended run around 2004-06 in ODIs though he was crap in that format for long stretches.

Having said that, it might not be a bad idea for England to bite the bullet and give a promising young 'un like Buttler a run over him in these relatively meaningless ODI series. India benefited a lot by giving the likes of Kohli, Raina and Pathan a lot of international experience and match-play in the lead-up to the World Cup. If Yuvraj had not hit form, he could have been dropped. Pathan turned out to be poor in the course of the tournament so he was replaced by Raina. Having several options and healthy competition never hurts. Right now, it seems there is an over-reliance on Pietersen because even though he is out of form, he has to be carried as it seems guys like Bell, Trott etc. cannot really replace what he brings to the team when he is at his best.

Not true at all, he averaged 42 in '07, 44 in 'O8. He hit a couple of tons in 'O8 and a 90 no.
Funnily enough in 09 and 10 he's only played 8 and 9 games in each of those years, when he was playing well, he was playing 25 games in 07 and 21 in 08.
