Ross Taylor named captain

I think that was the right choice.

But I can tell you that TV1 news is going to have a story tonight about McCullum apparently not taking this decision well and rumoured divisions within the team.

Should be interesting. McCullum is too much of a ****y high-school-jock **** for my liking, reckon Taylor has better potential to learn.

Make McCullum vice captain again.

Didn't do well enough in the world cup when it counted anyway (McCullum that is).

Watching on the news now:

1) Squeaky clean image off field helped him get the job
2) McCullum is part of the drinking culture enjoyed by 70% of the team; that 70% wanted him as captain
3) Taylor is going to bring about changes in this culture
4) Vaughan claims this is conjecture [drinking culture]
5) Former BC claims McCullum is going to become a divisive figure in the team. Baz yet to comment. Will take a few days to gather his thoughts

Taylor sounds like a brave man if he wants to try to change that culture instead of accepting the culture. Still if it is destructive and if it is excessive drinking then changes are needed.

I personally doubt this 70% - I mean who would the 7 or 8 drinkers be -

My speculation

The 70%
Baz
NMac
Mills
Southee
Franklin
Who else
Arnel? I doubt it

The 30%
Vettori
Martin
Ryder (he can't drink)
Williamson

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Is any of this actually true or are we just making it up to try and hide the fact we've got a **** boring team?

Taylor drinks, and I've also read him and Franklin are decent mates.

The drinking culture thing is bull **** speculation.

Good choice, IMO.

McCullum chasing the big bucks on the T20 circuit would have been a factor?

Good choice, I reckon.

Taylor is harder to replace in the team than McCullum, and that should be one of the major factors.

 Doesn't Taylor have a contract worth twice as much as McCullums? Taylor is a million dollar man IIRC.
I have no idea. I've given up on the IPL :p Just seems to me that McCullum is in demand in a lot of leagues while Taylor doesn't seem to be.

Ryder (he can't drink)
Very true, and this is the reason I hope this 'drinking culture' is being wildly exaggerated. It would be pretty rough on Ryder if 70% of the squad really did regularly go out and get on the sauce. He needs support from his teammates, not an all-encompassing drinking culture that he can no longer be a part of. Would they just all go out some nights while on tour and leave him alone in his hotel room? I hope not.

But it'd be hardly unprecedented if the media are blowing it out of proportion.

Well Taylor seems to lack a bit of cricketing brain iyam, but I thought the same of Dhoni and that has turned out OK. At least he's a mainstay in the side for the long term.
