I also keep hearing about Meaker. Why? All that's been said is he's quite quick. And plays for Surrey, of course. Anyone would think they've got the best attack in the world, never mind propping up division two for years.
Tbf - he hasn't played consistently due to injury (I'd guess), but when he did play, he has done very well this year.

More like 10+ years ago but back then Surrey were so good and it was no surprise that every Tom, Dick and Ian Ward got a test cap.

Though two of the best and most unsung heroes of that great era for Surrey, Ali Brown and Martin Bicknell were treated the worst by the England selectors.
Brown should have played more ODI's but Bicknell was criminally wasted. I often wonder what might have been had he formed the pace attack with Gough and Caddick through the 90's, yes it would still have been worse than the Aussie one but we'd have beaten more of the lesser sides along the way.

Makes it worse when Ormond and Giddins got caps while at Slurrey.

I hope the selectors realize that they need to play an extra batsman. Even if we play 10 bowlers its unlikely that they will be good enough to take 20 wickets. Chandimal should be given a go.

I wouldn't be so fussed about leaving Shahzad out if he hadn't already played a Test, gone to Australia and played well against Aus A, showing the selectors thought him next in line.

I would also not complain if it were someone who ever bowls half decently for his county getting picked ahead of him. I don't think that's too much to ask.
Maybe we are entering the new 21st century way of selection. Dernbach has more facebook 'likes' of his cricinfo profile than Shahzad.

To be honest, I dont see Dernback playing. Surely Finn plays and Dernbach has been selected for the experience of being in the squad?

There's clearly only one place for Maharoof and Perera. Given that Perera was actually pretty decent and got a few runs, keep him on and drop Maharoof for Chandimal.

Fernando will presumably come in to give the bowling a bit more threat, who for depends on the make-up of the attack. There's no real need for two spinners at Lord's but Lakmal hasn't impressed either. If they go with one spinner, I would think it'd be Herath to play and Mendis to miss out.

Yes. That is likely. But never put it past England to value Dernbach because he is a 'swing bowler' and offers 'variety' and also there is the possibility that Finn pulls up injured too and they are forced to play Dernbach.

Perera was pretty impressive. He maintained a good line and length against the England right handers. He dropped a bit short sometimes but on the whole was good and bowled one spell in particular to Trott and Bell which was high quality. Unfortunately, his pace and movement mean that he is not up to being a new ball bowler who will get constant wickets - but was still good to watch. I'd say he could be a good fifth bowler for Sri Lanka, in the future.

I think they should pick an extra batsman, in for Maharoof. Get Randiv in for Mendis and Fernando in for Lakmal. Lakmal was distinctly unimpressive.

Mostly agree except I think they will go in with 3 seamers considering the venue.

Surely Finn plays though.
You would hope so but this morning Flower was talking about Dernbach offering something different. 'He bowls outswing, has a good bouncer, and slower ball and can bowl for long periods'. He has only seen him play once.

Dernbach's first class average at Lords 61.00.
