Haha at you saying I have ridiculous opinions. You are always at the extreme in arguments. You are never reasonable or moderate at all. It's always "this is a no contest" or "he is rubbish".

And why do you keep bigging up Gilly? I know how good he was, he walks into my all-time XI. But Dhoni is close to him as a batsman. That is beyond doubt, the guy's record is amazing, as are his performances.

And I actually don't think Clarke's ton vs. India cost Australia the game, so get off your high horse. It wasn't brilliant though, and it hurt Australia in patches.

You and Spark keep saying that Clarke "proves your point". What point is that? That scoring runs in the middle can result in a 40+ average when you're not that good? How easy is it to average close to 50 whilst striking at close to 90? It's a lot harder than what Kallis and Clarke do.
I can't speak for benchy, but

I'm just saying that statistics and reality do not always match very well where ODIs are concerned. So I don't see why people are so busy trying to explain away the stats because it's just totally pointless.

Yeah I missed that post. Loaded thread.

My only point is that Gilly's record and performances aren't "miles better" than Dhoni's. That is all :p

Would love to know if Benchy thinks Tendulkar/Viv vs. Bevan is a no-contest.

If so he's got a warped sense of middle over batting imo.

Clarke wasn't always an ordinary ODI batsman was he? I vaguely remember him and Sarwan being among the top 5 ODI batsmen in the world at one point and having very similar figures. He then declined in ODIs simultaneous with his improvement in tests didn't he?

Up 'til the end of the WC, amongst the very best. No-one really knows why he started stonewalling after that, but there you have it. I've never really bought the Tests theory too much from a mental POV although his major technique change did happen at about the time.

Yeah which skews his stats. I don't think you'll have any one who has followed his career saying he was always a bad ODI batsman.

And he's improved in the last 12 months anyway.

It was what was squeezed between 2007 and later 2010 that was awful.

Currently will give it to Gilly....

But if dhoni maintains the current stat's for another 3-4 years he will be on top
if the captaincy part is also taken into count its dhoni already

Gotta say, almost every time ive seen Dhoni bat against Australia he has looked sluggish and eats up lots of dot balls. Whats his strike rate vs Australia?? I also dont recall him doing all that much against England. Sure does have that X factor about his batting, would be in an all time XI for me, as well as Gilly.

He made a good hundred (on a freeway against a slightly depleted attack, granted) vs us in the 09 7-match series

Dhoni's best exploits in his career so far have come against Pakistan and Sri Lanka... in particular he really tormented Pakistan in a few bilateral ODI series in 2005 and 2006.

I think point was that dhoni needed to perform in a big game ( especially in WCs ) - he hadn't done so, so that was a knock on him . He removed that blemish in the finals .

This basically sums up why Gilly is the better ODI batsman. Gilly has always been a big match performer whereas Dhoni hasn't, and he could do it against anyone anywhere anytime,.

Don't come much bigger than WC finals coming in at 118/3 chasing 270 odd. Strange that you've quoted abmk's post that says exactly that and still claim he hasn't performed in big games..

Score more runs against difficult opposition in pressure matches. Gilly can demolish any attack anywhere anytime given it's his day, but whenever I've seen Dhoni he usually struggles against good pace bowling with his awkward technique.
Umm, last I checked Gilchrist's record against Ambrose, Walsh, Wasim, Waqar, he was averaging in 20's. This came up in a discussion on comparing Nick Knight and Gilchrist in ODIs.
