So just how good is Jonathan Trott?

My point wasn't to big-up Hussey. I'm saying that any prediction that Trott won't have as drastic form drops because his technique is compact may be true, but similar points were made re: Hussey.
My point being that those things were said about Hussey because he was playing in home conditions so often

Fair enough but that is mostly irrelevant to the point that was being discussed. Hussey's home/away record isn't relevant to whether Trott being compact means he'll avoid Hussey-esque slumps.

At the end of the day, suggestions about Trott's technique helping him avoid significant form slumps were also said about Hussey... and Dravid now that I think about it.

They may be right about Trott, but Hussey and Dravid when playing well (whether it is home or away) also showed the same compact and impenetrable techniques.

Time will tell on Trott. Big fan though... in both forms.

Also Hussey in 2006 in South Africa opened once or twice and looked damn good if memory serves me correct.

Fair point from Augustus, tbf.

I think I probably made a few "well oiled, knows his own game" type posts about Hussey myself when he was spanking all-comers. Always did get bowled a lot (© saggers) tho.

Time will tell, I suppose.

As an aside, Sky have mentioned Dravid in comparison to Trott. Made the point that, despite the "Trott's a stonewaller" moans from the cheaper seats, he strikes at 48, which is 6 quicker than Dravid. Didn't mention Hussey, but after checking he strikes at 48 too. Would've guessed he was quicker. Funny how perceptions are wrong sometimes.

Trott gives the impression of being slow because he doesn't accelerate. I'd be willing to bet that he gets starts a lot more quickly than Dravid, hence his better strike rate overall, but Dravid has as quick a strike rate when getting hundreds.

Edit: Just checked, and Dravid has a SR of over 50 when getting hundreds compared to 42 overall. Trott's does go up a few points as well, but not as much. So it's not the answer but there's something to my theory.

Very good player, but i think he's suspect against balls moving into him at extreme pace....Suprised that a lot of pacers haven't use that line of attack against him.
:

I think most batsmen are susceptible to that. A lot of pacers haven't used that line of attack because most of them don't have the ability to bowl an inswinger at 150kph.

I'm just testing something.

Kallis waves at you.
Am I the only one that finds Kallis elegant? I don't find him boring to watch at all.

Trott has a superb ability to concentrate. Huge player for England. I don't much like watching him or Cook but I find them admirable as test players. Exactly what you want from your top order. Players that don't get anxious if they aren't scoring.

No-one will ever be as boring as Mark Richardson. Snoozefest from the moment he took guard.

Ive suffered through 16 years of boring Kallis batting, it really is a toss up between the two, but i'll go for Kallis as the most boring. In fact, maybe its not close at all. And if we are talking batting in England, then obviously Trott wins by 180000 country miles- Kallis has looked embarrassing in England on his 3 tours, and i'm talking 2001 Ponting in India embarrassing too.

Nah you're not the only one. Not only is Kallis rated highly on this forum, there are a few who enjoy watching him bat as well. I'm one of them.

Cover drive and pull shots are gorgeous.

 But Kallis looks lovely when he drives.

Quit the horsing around boys, he's going through a good trott at the moment, and looks to be furlongs ahead of the bowlers. The key will be whether he can harness this confidence and turn it into a prolonged career. I'll stop now because my voice is getting a little hoarse.

I think Kallis is a pretty good comparison for Trott, actually.

IJLT doesn't quite have the great man's range of shot (although he does have mean straight and cover drives) but he does share his ability to completely play in his own bubble. Kallis is, unquestionably, a selfish batsman tho and occasionally has hurt his team's chances by a refusal to up his pace. I do wonder if we sometimes might see the same thing from Trott.

I can't think of any occasions yet, but one does have the suspicion he's not the man to put the hammer down when quick runs are needed for a declaration.

I'll give Kallis a bit of credit for stepping up his game in that India series in SA this year. But that doesnt change some horrible over-defensive batting for the other 15 years of his career.

Yeah I've grown to really like watching him in recent times (when he's not grinding India into the dust).

His shots are nice to watch - and he has improved a lot of late. The 3rd Test knocks were both fantastic innings and also a real treat to watch from a strokeplay point of view. However I just feel that at times he is too "textbook" in a way, it's almost too perfect (I've said similar about Ian Bell here) that, I dunno, I just can't really get excited about his strokeplay.

Kallis’s six-hour unbeaten 85 as South Africa powered towards a declaration against England in 1999-2000 is my favourite example of Kallisness. I get the impression Trott is capable of similar stuff but he's yet to go off that particular deep end of turgid batting.

Kallis is the more versatile batsman but I don't think he's better than Trott aesthetically. Trott looks geniunely good while driving, just gives it a sort of effortless lean that's really quite admirable.
