So just how good is Jonathan Trott?

Indeed. As toothless an attack that is possible. Worse than the Ashes attack he plundered. Could be a very rich summer for him indeed...

He's an extremely good batsman. England's best right now. I think he has great potential but will wait and see how he performs for at least the next two years atleast.

He has a good case for making a World XI but he's not an opener and I think Kallis, Sachin and Sanga are pretty much walk-ins.

Sehwag
Another opener
Kallis
Tendulkar
Sangakkara
-
Haddin
Swann
Zaheer
Anderson
Steyn

He has a very good case for being in the open place in that list based on merit but Laxman has been in the form of his career too recently and he's a more natural no.6.

he's one those players the more you watch him the more you realise just how good he is, will not blow you away like most great batsman do at their first impressions but as the innings develops you get the feeling he has absolutely no weaknesses and fully understands his strengths. If he can avoid any injuries will average mid 50 comfortably.

Winning over NZ in the subcontinent 1-0 in a 4 match series is not a feat to be proud of, though.

Yeah, that's a good summary, though I will refrain from making any predictions about his career average. He's similar to Kallis in a lot of ways.

Indian efforts to draw in South Africa were quite impressive though. Though it helped that Paris is a terrible spin option.

hang on

State Vice-Captain
he is obviously a very good batsman in excellent form. will he end up with a 50 average in tests? difficult to say but certainly has a decent shot at it. he has played against 2 good attacks so far in his career.....has done well in one and badly in the other.

the question that i would ask myself is where he ranks in the list of the best batsmen in the world at present. i would have him behind tendulkar, kallis, and perhaps even cook.
how does he he compare to another relative 'newbie', gambhir? no idea.

Gambhir hasn't been in the greatest of test match form despite having a few good knocks in SA. Would take Sanga over anybody in he world atm tbh. Has been maintaining an insane standard for a few years.

he's a great example of how a decent batsman can become world class just by doing few simple things to perfection. He's a great judge off his off stump makes sure he is not an LBW candidate early in his innings and has 2-3 bread and butter strokes where he keeps peppering them, also feel he's one of those modern day batsman who have benefited from modern day bowlers inabilty in setting up a batsman much like how Mcgrath did in a reverse situation.

Shoaib showed on a couple of occasions that he might be susceptible to a fast indipper but don't see many current fastbowlers having that ability maybe Steyn and Roach.
