Yes top effort from Cook, was a ball that was asking to be cut, short and wide enough, maybe done by a little extra bounce. KP can be vital here in moving this game forward at pace.

Kulasekara is the very definition of medium pace to me imo. He does a little bit with the ball and is pretty accurate but I don't feel he'd be much more effective than Maharoof/Perera.
He's not very quick, no, but he knows how to bowl. He's more accurate, thinks about his bowling more and moves the ball a lot more than the bowlers on display.

Regardless of how he appears, the bloke knows how to take wickets. He's had faaaar more success in First Class cricket with the ball than any of the seamers playing and he's actually had success internationally as well.

Nah, I really disagree. Maharoof and Perera are not nearly as skilled at moving the ball. Kulasekara has 243 FC wickets at 22.64 - that is genuinely special. I think he'd have done pretty well over a series here.

I'm perhaps doing him a slight disservice, as I haven't really seen him bowl in tests since the last time they toured England in 06 and he looked pedestrian tstl. His test record isn't as bad as though it would be as well so it's a bit strange he's not playing.

Maharoof should not be in this side.
Haha, shows how much I know about cricketers outside the Australian State system. Awful shot from Cook though.

The man at deep cover is wise for Roofers, he won't get punished as much when he misses his length.

What happened to Welegedera? Seemed like he had the stuff to be decent in international level the last I saw him.
On his debut against England, I recall being genuinely impressed. He seemed to have a fair bit of pace but it disappeared the next time he played and he was bowling at 125kph. He doesn't move the ball a great deal and I don't think he'll take many wickets unless he gets back up to 135kph.

Yeah Welegedera's debut was awesome but his subsequent matches have been extremely disappointing. Still probably should've been picked for this match, though.

He is an unrecognizable bowler to the one who toured in 06. I remember watching some of that series on ESPN Classic, a few months back and honestly not recognizing Kulasekara's bowling at all. There was no speed gun on the coverage, but he didn't look more than 120kph there, he is always around 130kph these days. Since 06, he has become a good deal quicker and the action is significantly different.

Maybe it is worth asking in the Cricket on Youtube thread to see if anyone has footage of the debut. It definitely made me sit up and take notice.

Wow that's not got up at all. Think it's pad first, based on the hot spot.

Frustrating, though. Could go either way.

EDIT: And gone. Think that's the right call. KP waits hours and hours to bat and then gets that
