Thankfully we get to bowl to Anderson first up tomorrow. When will teams figure out the night watchman is useful. Much more likely with a night watchmen that you lose two wickets tomorrow, and put England under some pressure

 Yeah truth sux sometimes..

btw how was the day at cardiff???? thought u'll be putting in some online commentary...
Lol even if you think Sree is a better bowler, Broad is still more talented because of his batting ability. WAG he is.

And it was a good day thanks. BTF. Couldn't be doing with much online commentary, wind up missing too much

Spent most of the past two days in the bookies watching the game.

PJ batted very well, patient enough and has enough of an all-round game to do well in England. Batted within his limitations and didn't chase. First time I've properly seen Paranavitana, and he looked really good when he was balanced. Fell over to the off a little bit, and reckon that England will get him LBW a few times in the series.

The Poms bowled pretty well, and I saw GIMH refer to Jimmy as "***y" and it did look it. Reckon he was still bowling the length that he was in Australia though, when he was only moving it half a bat length. He had to be more prepared to be driven yesterday and today, because he could have taken a quick bag and ripped out some poles early doors if he did. Had it moving so far that even if you chased it a little bit, you weren't going to nick it. Broad was disappointing early, but got better as the innings went on. Nearly broke a TV though when he kept on celebrating LBWs without appealing.

I have worries for Samaraweera, his front shoulder was nowhere to been seen every time that the ball swung out, and on a quicker deck he will nick more often when he goes searching for the ball with his bottom hand, all squared up.

I agreed with Mikey at the end of the day that, with a young attack, keeping the plans simple was a good idea, even if they were wasting the new ball a little, they were keeping England dry and working themselves into the game and some good spells. If it were Aus, they would have been through 16 bowling plans by now.

Could be a very interesting day tomorrow, England need to bat very well to surpass SL's effort and while England need to remain patient, they cannot afford to take their time too much if they have genuine aspirations of still winning this. It will take a big effort to take 20 wickets on this track depending on how the surface deteriorates. With Anderson struggling, the burden becomes heavier on Swann in the second innings, in terms of workload and picking up the wickets.

Was convinced SL's batting line-up lacked depth and didn't foresee a Prasanna Jaya ton, but credit to him, when SL needed runs, and he was selected as a top six batsman, he delivered. You can see why Samaraweera has struggled previously in England, as Vic Orthodox alluded to. He follows the ball and plays some distance from his body, getting squared up far too frequently than he'd like.

There's been plenty in this track for the seamers.
Yes I'm not saying it's a dead pitch, but much of the first day was washed out, England now seem to be down to three specialist bowlers, SL don't appear to have the most penetrative seam attack going around, so I think both sides may find it tricky unless they get on a bit of a roll. It is swinging about, England swung the old ball conventionally well into the innings, but if the pitch flattens out as the game progresses, a victory for either side may be unlikely.

SL made 400, and I do expect (well, hope) England to go past that, depending how quickly they do so, means that time may be the biggest obstacle in trying to force a victory. Still you never know, should England collapse tomorrow, we could have a real game on.

This.

I think that Broad has much more talent with bat and ball for test cricket. I can't see Sree improving much at all now ( He was never that good to start off with, tbh ), where as Broad is going to keep developing and he is going to end up a pretty good bowler, IMO

Agree...

But Sree is still the better bowler... and with this kind of attitude I can't see Broad lasting very long in the International scene tbh..

With the exception of watching Cook bat (needles in the eyes, I'm afraid), it was a pretty interesting day of test cricket

SL stuck at it, Anderson bowled beautifully and the English bowlers produced enough crackers to keep life interesting

Having said that Eng could face some problems with their attack unless they improve markedly

Broad didnt just have an off day - he averages 37 in test cricket because he isnt that good

But the big disappointment was Tremlett - accurate enough but down on pace with no variation. This was him pre-Ashes and it remains to be seen whether that was simply a fluke

Yeah, the burden is on Broad to demonstrate that he is a better bowler than those career figures indicate. By 34 Tests, you can usually start taking the averages seriously. Not sure if he's a better or worse bowler than Sreesanth and Ishant Sharma (who cop an awful lot of **** on this forum) but he sure ain't a long way off those two, as it stands.

He's a decent bowler, definitely worth his place in the side IMO and certainly better than what he showed for the first 15 overs that he bowled but when I said he's "Hilf-like" I meant that whilst he bowls good areas, gets plays and misses and gets good bounce, he bowls just a bit too short to get big wicket hauls.

You would have to say though he did suffer from a fair amount of bad luck. Not as much as he thinks he did but a hell of a lot of genuine edges seemed to be going at catchable height to 3rd man.
