Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL)

As if I wasn't sick enough of IPL :-O
Next year onwards, July won't be so bad. The IPL is being played in summer this year because of the ODI WC. The Indian domestic FC season ends in February or early March;and the IPL would normally commence immediately after that.

can never be ipl, but good on the guys.

in the long run, if the pay packets are attractive, will clog the sl supply line to ipl.

rightly so time slc became self reliant and not extended wing of bcci.

although slc would want to implemet all icc anti corruption code and stuff.

Good stuff.Really excited about this.

Go Nagenahira!!
Not really a big fan of T20 cricket but this looks good (maybe because Pak cricketers are playing???).

Yeah and will support Nagenahira unless Wahab Riaz is in another team

The maximum salary on offer is 30,000$. It is less than what many players makes in 1 match in IPL. We cannot compare it salary wise to IPL (IPL will always be much bigger also in no of international stars) but some good players playing should make it exciting.

The Pak people would be happy and for them it is much bigger than IPL coz they will see their players playing in T20 league after a long long time

thanks for that. that pay surely can improve imho. will need to pump in dubai money I guess, and presence of pak cricketers can do that. but as I said before, will also need the strictest enforcement of icc anticorruption code to avoid future potential issuess.

I just keep wondering that people keep talking of Dubai money as if they have so much and they are giving it for charity to cricket (Arabs love football). Every investment is based on ROI. The main source of income for IPL is TV rights. The SL and Pak market is much much smaller as compared to India (As the middle class of Pak is smaller as a % of Pop as compared to India). I don't see a major jump in the salaries.

The place they can match the salary in my opinion is England though not with 18 teams but around 6 to 10 teams

While I do agree overall, a few millions are peanuts for the oil barons based out of dubai.

also, sl is an emerging market, now that the civil war has finally come to some sort of end. there are opportunities to build in, and owning a team there can be a fantastic branding exercise.

now coming to pakistan, I am sure there is a failry large chunk of expats also out there, who can also be targeted. they need something to connect to their country, and cricket in these times of distress can be quite a soothing effect.

but all that said, sl board should approach this more from a big bash perspective than ipl one. a jazzed up domestic t20 competition than a razzmattazz cricket stars meet bollywood stars - cricketainment that the ipl is.

That is what the lower strata of India want. For them it is more of entertainment. Hence they are building what sells :)

Again Bun, it is the return that you will get for that millions. Yes SL is a emerging market but very very small as compared to Ind. So play million in salary in India you have way to recover but not in SL when you pay similar amounts. India has loads of Indian business houses, not that many in SL

If Pak has got a expat population remember India has a much bigger Expat population than Pak who are equally cricket crazy. So when we compare size IPL has that thing inclusive and we cannot have stats of Pak, SL and expats and compare it.

SLPL will never have millions. Like IPL is primarily build for India, SLPL is for SL and Pak will soon have a PPL (In December) built for Pak. The primary objective is to target the home country, pay domestic players more and a way of earning through domestic cricket which was non existent earlier. We should not be comparing all these tournaments. These all are different made for different market

I agree. To put it in footballing terms,The IPL is the equivalent of the English Premier League, with SLPL being the Scottish League.

Good money and exposure for the younger SL players. SL may uncover loads of talent in the long run through this. This tournament isn't meant for the international stars to make money, its probably more to do with blooding new talent. Great news for Pakistani cricketers too.

Don't they stand for geographic regions in Srilanka?

Also, just read that the winner of the SLPL will qualify for the CL.Good stuff.

You guys are absolutely right. Those are the names of the 7 provinces of Sri Lanka.

Earlier we had Tamil insurgency in the 2 states and hence the tournament had 5 teams. Now with civil war over all 7 teams can particiapte

Pakistan players approached for SLPL

Pakistan Cwebers can be Happy with the news :)

Up to eight top Pakistan players are likely to be in the running to play in the first edition of the Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL), allowing players from that country to finally benefit from some of the riches on offer in lucrative Twenty20 leagues around the world. The SLPL, a likely to feature players from around the world, is scheduled to be held at the end of July and beginning of August this year, a window in the FTP where Pakistan has no commitments currently.

Both Pakistan captains - Shahid Afridi from the limited overs side and Misbah-ul-Haq from the Test side - have been approached, as have Shoaib Akhtar, Shoaib Malik and Umar Gul.

The players were first approached directly by the organisers of the tournament, the Singapore-based Somerset Entertainment, something that the PCB wasn't pleased about. But eventually the organisers contacted the PCB asking for clearance for the players to participate and they have been given a positive response. "We told them, in theory, we have no issues with our players taking part in the tournament," a senior board official told ESPNcricinfo. "The first priority of each player of course will be Pakistan's international commitments and if there is something on in that window and the player concerned is picked for Pakistan, that commitment will take priority."

The participation of Malik will depend on whether he will be cleared by the PCB's integrity committee, a condition which has kept him out of the national side since last summer.

Players from Pakistan are currently the only ones from the Test-playing nations not to be taking part in the richest domestic Twenty20 league of all, the IPL. Though a number of players took part in the inaugural season of the tournament, in 2008, deteriorating political ties between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks later that year have led to them missing out since, much to the chagrin of the players themselves, some of whom can rightly claim to be among the best international players in the format. The players were even put into the auction for the third season of the IPL but no franchise was willing to buy them, given the potentially tricky diplomatic and logistical issues that could have emerged.

For similar reasons, no Pakistan domestic side has taken part in the equally lucrative IPL spin-off, the Champions League, which brings together the best domestic Twenty20 sides from around the world. A few Pakistan players, including Afridi, Gul and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan have taken part in the Australian Big Bash but the timing of it generally tends to clash with international commitments and so curtails participation.

There is also regular participation in Twenty20 competitions in England, as well as longer-term county contracts but by and large, Pakistan's players have missed out on the bonanza of the last few years. "We are aware that our players have not benefitted as others around the world have done, though much of this is out of our hands," the official said. "This will be a good opportunity, if things work out, for them to take part."

Though full financial details of the league are yet to emerge, one estimate suggests that there will be three salary tabs with the highest at US$ 30,000.
