Rahul Dravid - What would you do? Is he still one of India's 6 best batsman?

actually had the world team in mind. to make it as extreme as possible.

guesstimate was used to pander to the youthful demotic on here....given that i am emoticonically challenged!
I don't think either of them stand much of a chance at the all-time world XI. I know Sehwag was supposedly shortlisted but that's because as good as he is, I don't think he can match some of the plaudits some of his more vocal fans give him.

hang on

State Vice-Captain
i don't think he stands to make such a team, either, but he is sui generis. there is no doubt about that. much as gichrist was.

even though Sehwag's record has been very good but for some reason I have not been able to put him high up on the list of openers. Maybe it has to do something with his style of play.......I am not sure....

interesting riff about indian and pakistani batsmen. would be interested in knowing how people would rank the top ten batsmen from india and pakistan collectively.

my stab at it, from those i have watched:

tendulkar
gavaskar
dravid
miandad
sehwag
laxman
inzamam
abbas
vishwanath
yousuf

with apologies to azharuddin, younis, anwar

wouldn't know how to rate the great hazares and mohammeds and merchants since i did not watch them.

now, if one were to include the sri lankans, how would it go?

tendulkar
gavaskar
dravid
miandad
sangakkara
sehwag
jayawardene
inzamam
laxman
abbas
India/Pakistan

1) Sachin Tendulkar
2) Sunil Gavaskar
3) Javed Miandad

10 times out of 10? Even if one of those times was an overcast morning in Nottingham or a Wanderers greentop?
Yea, I'd take my chances of an hour of Sehwag completely re-orienting the game and the series.

I have enourmous respect for Sehwag but the kind of innings that Laxman is capable of on a day when no-one else is that makes the difference for me.

If you listed the 10 best innings by either of them, Laxman would have all 10.
No, he wouldn't, but if he did, it's a damning indication of his lack of consistency against most teams (aside from Australia).

He does from when Sehwag started his career and he started batting in the middle order which is his actual position. He has averaged over 50 for the period of over a decade now.

That's just manipulating statistics though, isn't it? If VVS Laxman had an overall average of fifty but "only" an average of forty-five since Sehwag's debut, we wouldn't be using that line of argument. I don't really agree with SS' view here; just wanted to point that out.

Sehwag can't be all time XI opener for same reason as hayden. Both sophisticated FTB's who are **** when the ball starts swinging.
Hutton and gavaskar all the way.

All the tracks which are not green and where the ball is not swinging that much are not flat.

A recent example would be the IPL game yesterday ,where the ball was bouncing sometimes about 2 inches.
And where Sehwag played a outstanding knock, while some of those who do well on "swinging surfaces" were looking like fish out of water.

not Miandad, he was sort of like the Jayawardene of that era. Plus, he was hardly ever given out LBW at home.
huh?

he has double hundreds in England/Nzl also scored twin hundreds in the 88 tour to Windies something which I doubt Jayawardena would have ever done.

He was hardly the only beneficiary. As far as I am concerned, him, Tendulkar and Gavaskar are the only three all-time great batsmen from Asia.

Similar home and away avgs. Jayawardene has scored a 100 everywere except SA, even though he has played not many games overseas.
Has 2 100s at Lords. High score of close of 400...

Go have a look at Miandad's record!

How many times was he given out LBW in the 1st half of his career at home? 0
Corresponding figure for overseas is 17.
So? How does that conclusively prove that it was the umpire's fault????

Miandad also didn't get an LBW in the 1986-87 series against WI at home when Imran was sick of such complaints and decided to bring in neutral umpires. Incidentally both neutral umpires were from India. So something was wrong with the umpiring again????

And Miandad scored double hundreds against NZ, and Eng abroad. Also was a key member of Pak sides winning in India and England and tying with the WI. So yes your statement does sound ridiculous 8-). Also one of only two players whose career average never dipped below 50.
