WHY do they say this?

There is no sane way of comparing them across more than 60 years and arriving at definitive conclusions.
In general agree with this; it is better to just accept both as great batsmen whose influence on the game goes far more than mere batsmanship.

But if a comparison has to be made, for whatever compelling reason, IMHO there could be only one outcome:
It would be absolutely impossible to classify any batsman as being greater than Bradman. It would also be absolutely impossible to say of any one, with any degree of conviction, that this particular batsman is the equal of Bradman.

Agree. I am not for a second suggesting that Sachin is definitevely better than Bradman, but I cannot buy arguments as simplistic as "oh see he avgs 99.96 vs Sachin's 57 lulz he is lightyears better, naysayers are just idiots" etc etc.

That seems to be the problem. Most people are not even open for a debate which is sad and to my earlier point about would a tennis or a football fan dismiss this kind of argument is still unanswered and the answer I got was i'm ignorant.

Was that point meant to be serious then because starting off by saying you'd never seen a football fan deny that Maradona was the greatest player ever made it look to me like some sort of joke post.

Well Pele was considered Sir Don until Maradona came on. Zidane is possibly closest to Diego and Messi is taking over. But football fans dont have this stigma of embracing the present, cricket fans do. It was not a joke post.

There's a debate in other sports because the answer isn't so clear cut.

Had Bradman never existed then a similar debate would take place in cricket.

Bradman>>>>>>>>>>>Tendulkar

Thread closed.
I was going to make a thread comparing the abilities of Andrew Strauss and Saeed Anwar, but thanks to this thread I now recognise that as they never played in throughout the same period that would be an incredibly innapropriate thing to do.

Also, since the pressure on a player is key to determining his abilities, I would submit that Nasser Hussain >>> Tendulkar. Played through a very turbulant time for English cricket tbh.
