West Indies Domestic Season 2010/11

The Windwards beat the Leewards by eight wickets in their match, to carry their team to 41 points, and confirm the final place in the semi-finals. Gavin Tonge hit 75 and Jacques Taylor 63, as the Leewards batted much better in their second innings, reaching 344 all out. Gary mathurin took 5-86 for the Windwards, who were set a target of 99 to win. They reached it for the loss of Browne and Fletcher, with Charles scoring 52 not out, and Lesporis was with him at the end. There was one wicket each for Baker and Athanaze.

The England Lions could only finish third, tied with Jamaica on 51 points, behind leaders CCC on 57, and Trinidad on 52 points.

Quite a few of us on this MB, including me, thought that the Lions would crush most of the teams in this tournament, for the following reasons:

1) According to the Test rankings, England are supposed to be ranked higher than the West Indies.

2) All of England's second-string players were packed into one side - the Lions. In contrast, the Caribbean second-string players were spread out among seven teams.

But the Lions could only manage two wins, drawing five of their games.

Does this mean that Caribbean domestic cricket is not as bad as we thought? Or was it bad, and we've improved in recent times?

Jade Dernbach averaged mid-teens with the ball and according to the stats you provided guys like Ganga are scoring runs by the bucket load while anyone who bowls under 60mph is still taking wickets for fun. The Lions finished unbeaten with a heavily depleted squad. Don't think it was a glowing endorsement of Windies cricket.

Look at the bowling attack for the last match the Lions played, it was woeful yet they were only 1 wicket from winning against the supposed best side in it. When you consider that Lions lost Bopara, Dernbach and Rashid to England it was a decent effort.

The fact Dernbach did well shows it is a weak competition, if he ever plays an international we are in trouble.

At the same time, all of England's second-stringers were packed into one team, while the West Indies second-stringers were spread around....

And the Caribbean teams also lost Dev Bishoo, Kirk Edwards and Devon Thomas, so that balances against the players the Lions lost.

Now, I'm not saying that the Caribbean domestic cricket has gone back to the glory days of the 1980s. Just that either the competition has improved, or the Lions were not as strong as we thought they were....

Before it started, there were fears that the Lions would destroy everybody and finish way ahead of the opposition. That said, the regional teams made a good showing, in particular Jamaica, Trinidad and the CCC, and the Lions finished third, despite some positive captaincy from Hidreth, who was clearly trying to win matches with bold declarations. But it seems that the Lions lacked a little edge in the bowling, aside from Briggs and Dernbach of course. YOu know the old adage - batting saves matches, but bowling wins matches. The other bowlers either didn't play enough, or were inconsistent. However, as the stats below show, the batting was very good. Maybe the only criticism that could be made was about how slow the Lions batted at times (Kieswetter apart), sometimes at less than three runs an over, which didn't give their bowlers enough time to bowl out the opposition.

These are the batsmen who've scored more than 400 runs....

1) Marlon Samuels 750 runs ave 68.18 (Jamaica)

2) James Hildreth 546 runs ave 60.66 (England Lions)

3) James Taylor 527 runs ave 58.55 (England Lions)

4) Andre Fletcher 522 runs ave 40.15 (Windward Islands)

5) Darren Ganga 513 runs ave 73.28 (Trinidad & Tobago)

6) Kyle Corbin 510 runs ave 39.23 (Combined Campuses and Colleges)

7) Lendl Simmons 508 runs ave 46.18 (Trinidad & Tobago)

8) Kraigg Brathwaite 473 runs ave 43.00 (Barbados)

9) Wavell Hinds 446 runs ave 49.55 (Jamaica)

10) Craig Kieswetter 440 runs ave 48.88 (England Lions)

11) Brendan Nash 419 runs ave 46.55 (Jamaica)

12) AW Gale 417 runs ave 46.33 (England Lions)

13) Denesh Ramdin 406 runs ave 40.60 (Trinidad & Tobago)

Here are the bowlers who've taken 20 or more wickets....

1) Danny Briggs 33 wkts ave 18.87 (England Lions)

2) Gary Mathurin 32 wkts ave 18.03 (Windward Islands)

3) Ryan Austin 32 wkts ave 20.93 (Combined Campuses and Colleges)

4) Kavesh Kantasingh 28 wkts ave 19.85 (Combined Campuses and Colleges)

5) Veerasammy Permaul 25 wkts ave 18.88 (Guyana)

6) Amit Jaggernauth 24 wkts ave 27.54 (Trinidad & Tobago)

7) Imran Khan 24 wkts ave 28.41 (Trinidad & Tobago)

8) Rayad Emrit 23 wkts ave 17.65 (Trinidad & Tobago)

9) Carlos Brathwaite 23 wkts ave 19.30 (Combined Campuses and Colleges)

10) Fidel Edwards 22 wkts ave 23.77 (Barbados)

11) Odean Brown 22 wkts ave 31.40 (Jamaica)

12) Kenroy Peters 21 wkts ave 17.28 (Windward Islands)

13) Mervin Matthew 21 wkts ave 19.33 (Windward Islands)

14) Pedro Collins 21 wkts ave 21.61 (Barbados)

15) Shannon Gabriel 21 wkts ave 30.47 (Trinidad & Tobago)

16) Nelon Pascal 20 wkts ave 22.65 (Windward Islands)

Spinners have once again dominated, but it was good to see fast bowlers Edwards, Gabriel, Matthew and Pascal among the leading wicket-takers, and Jerome Taylor would've been there too, before he got injured....

Medium-pacers Emrit, Peters and Brathwaite also took quite a few wickets.

I am happy with how it has gone for Lions, the bowling looked weak before the competition started and it has proved to be the weak link, great to see Briggs do well, he has so much potential for the future. Of the bowlers i can only realistically see Woakes and Rashid getting international call ups this year, if we play Dernbach at any stage we either have a mass amount of injuries or the selectors have gone mad.

Slightly worrying for Windies that the majority of the best bats are tried failures at test level apart from a couple of exceptions. As for the bowling you just pray Edwards and Taylor are able to get fit and stay fit as them combined with Roach would be a useful attack.

It's mostly because the Lions' batting will always be a step closer to national level than the bowling. Bowlers get changed so much more often that there's far more of them around the national squad.

So the Lions bowlers are barely in the top 10 if that, and people like Buck and Carter are miles away. That's not even including experienced bowlers like Harmison who could be called up in an emergency. The batsmen on the otther hand are right in there. Hildreth or Taylor, or both, will almost certainly debut this year and CK was in the T20 squad in Australia.

I agree with that, Buck is another with huge potential and he will learn so much in county cricket off Hoggard.I think Buck and Briggs both have the talent to be very good players in the future but both are only aged around 20, it is important we don't shove them in too early like we did with the likes of Plunkett and Dawson in previous years.

Been an excellent workout for the Lions and it seems to me they did really well. They may not have been runaway leaders, personally didn't expect them to be. They were playing in alien conditions, had countless changes to the sides through rest and injury, and yet didn't lose a game.

Not to forget that they got themselves into a winning position almost every match, with at least two ending with the opposition just salvaging a draw. Then there's the Guyana match, where almost the entire thing was rained off after the Lions bowlers skittled them for 78. It was a great performance, better than it looks at first sight.

At the halfway stage, both semi-finals were in contrasting positions.

Brendan Nash hit 207 off 349 balls and Wavell Hinds 131 not out, supported by Marlon Samuels with a knock of 80, as Jamaica posted 574-7, with a declaration surely not far away. For Trinidad, seamer Rayad Emrit has taken 2-60 and Amit Jaggernauth 2-102 so far.

Spinner Kavesh Kantasingh took 5-38 to dismiss the Windwards for a mere 173, and he was supported by seamer Carlos Brathwaite with three wickets, and spinner Ryan Austin with two. Keeper Lindon James topscored with 48, while there were 31s from Kevin James and Andre Fletcher. With a first-innings lead of 83, the CCC doubled that by reaching 85-3 at stumps, having lost Omar Phillips (14), Thomas (five) and Kyle Corbin (31). The not out batsmen are Rommel Currency (32) and Raymon Reifer (two). The wicket-takers for the Windwards so far are Sebastien with two and Polius with one, to date.

The CCC continued their dream run by thrashing the Windwards to secure their place in the final, which they will host in Bridgetown on the weekend. Rommel Currency topscored again, hitting 70, in the CCC's second innings total of 202, while there were 20s from Raymon Reifer and Kevin McClean. Polius took 5-50, while Liam Sebastien captured three wickets, and Gary Mathurin two. The Windwards were never in the chase, and were bundled out for just 128, Lesporis topscoring with 55 against Ryan Austin's 5-31 and another spinner, Kavesh Kantasingh, opening the bowling with 4-58.

Jamaica set Trinidad a first innings target of 665, as Wavell Hinds made 165 off 280 balls, Amit Jaggernauth taking 3-115, and there were two wickets each for Ravi Rampaul, Rayad Emrit, and Shannon Gabriel. Trinidad were fighting back from a bad start on 198-4 going into today's final day, with Darren Ganga on 69 not out, and with him was Denesh Ramdin on 49. The batsmen out are Lendl Simmons (five), Imran Khan (17), Sherwin Ganga (42), and Darren Bravo for a duck. There were two wickets each for pacers Andre Russell and Jason Dawes.

English commie David Brooks says that the English Lions say that the Caribbean domestic competition was at a higher standard than expected, higher than division two, and probably on par with division one in the county champs.

And that's lunch....

Replying to Jamaica's 664 all out, Trinidad reached 448-9 at the close, thanks to 107 from Darren Ganga and Rayad Emrit's 113 not out. Denesh Ramdin made 54, Kieron Pollard 48, and Sherwin Ganga 42, while Andre Russell took 4-89, and fellow speedster Jason Dawes took two wickets.

'T&T, who finished second on the points table, a point ahead of Jamaica, are considering legal action after losing out on a place in the final, to Jamaica who finished fourth. According to the tournament rules, if semi-final games end in a no-result, the team which came out on top during the head-to-head clash in the preliminary round advances. But T&T manager Omar Khan said this had not been made clear. "There is still some misinterpretation concerning the rule pertaining to advancing to the finals," Khan said. "We find it very unfair. What is the reward of playing consistent cricket all season then?"'

Quite a remarkable turn around by Nash. Seem to remember him having a fairly bad start.

I'm quite interested to see what Carlos Brathwaite is like. Seems a handy player. Also it's good to see Fidel Edwards getting onto the list as well.

West Indies still really aren't playing enough FC games unfortunately unless some of the players go over and play in England

To be fair to Nash, he'd hit a few half-centuries, and was in the second XI of run-scorers, until that double-century....

With regards to Caribbean domestic cricket, I'd like to see a double-round-robin, like they had last year, I think, or was it the year before? I would like to see the domestic competition going on at the same time that the Pakistan and India tours are taking place in the Caribbean.

The final between Jamaica and CCC takes place today:

Good to see there's no word about Trinidad's threat of legal action....
