I agree that they aren't comparable on current form. I'd also agree that Pietersen hasn't done justice to his potential, but let us not pretend that there is some huge gulf between them when it comes to overall careers.

This. Sangakkara is in better form right now, that is undeniable, but there is little that separates the two over their whole careers. I'd have Pietersen ahead as he is equally adept at playing spin and pace. While Sangakkara is good, he isn't in the same ballpark as Pietersen when it comes to playing spin.

Not sure why that is so controversial. Give Pietersen a year full of playing Mithun and Ishant Sharma at home, we'll see what it does to his average.

I just don't think the difference between the two is as big as their averages insinuate, if at all there is a difference that is. You'd think Chris Martin and Ricky Ponting were being compared, judging from some of the reactions here.

Kevin Pietersen has treated some of the best bowlers of the world with absolute disdain - not just in England, but in the backyards of the said bowlers as well. To be very honest, even the most die-hard Sangakkara fan will accept that he still has a thing or two to prove away from home. I know it isn't really his fault that he doesn't get to play much outside of Sri Lanka - but it is what it is. And, as aforesaid, he is far more proficient at playing spin.

Anyway, we don't have long to wait. The two will lock horns in England in a few months time. We'll see who wins that battle.

KP is probably a more naturally gifted player but Sanga is a more determined player and scores more runs because of it. Both are very good but you would have to take Sanga over KP simply on weight of runs.

Mate, 2007 calls and tells you to wake up. The same bowlers that you claim Sangakkara feasts on in the subcontinent are virtually identical to the ones that have managed to successfully reduce KP's average. You say that Sangakkara still has left to prove a few things away from home, and no one will deny that. But Pietersen has plenty to prove both home and away because hes been rubbish for 2.5 years straight.

Nope, I refuse to believe that an argument exists. Sanga has played for 11 years, KP for 6, How can they be even close overall? Even ignoring that Sanga also has displayed a higher standard of batsman-ship overall.

What you're doing is not like comparing Lara to Sachin at the end of 2000, It's like comparing Dravid to Sachin at the same point in time.

Pietersen has clearly played a lot more tests per year - not sure why that should be held against him. If you want to nitpick further, you could look at the number of matches played against each opponent, home and away.

Yeah, Sanga is clearly ahead of Pietersen, but not by light years or anything. There isn't a massive gap in the number of hundreds, or the really standout innings they have played. However, it seems Sanga is much likelier to fulfill his potential and go down as a great looking at how things have gone in the last couple of years. SL's tour of England will be really interesting, last time they went there, Pietersen was really tearing it up and playing some brilliant knocks.

Debatable to be honest. He was pretty good and was just overshadowed by Shane Warne which Harbhajan would as well. I would say 31-32 would be fitting.
